You never know how many boating accidents there are until a gun thread on the internets. Then it's fricking Midway.

A better argument for personal defense firearms would be that police don't protect you against criminal activity. They only react to criminal activity.

100% correct. I'm a cop and I tell people all the time if the criminal himself called me up and told me he was about to break into your house (thus eliminating the time delay of you recognizing that an armed intruder is actually breaking into your house, you dialing 911 and the line getting answered, the call taker typing up the call, the dispatcher getting the call from the call taker and assigning a unit) I am still not going to get there in time to save you.

Get a gun.

Or a big dog.

But seriously my GSD has protected me several times in ways that a gun cannot. There's just something about them that inherently scares off bad guys.

With a weapon I have to engage the bad guy somehow for it to be effective, either by declaring I have a weapon, displaying it or actually shooting it...that means I also have to be vigilant enough to recognize trouble at all times and be prepared to deal with the consequences of using a weapon on another person, which even in self defense I imagine would be a headache and an experience that most people would like to avoid.

...now a big arse German Shepherd that sits in my yard all day, barks like crazy at any approacher and destroys anything that enters my fence line...that is preferable, at least in my mind, to owning a firearm. I do own one but it's a LR and of limited use in self defense.

I don't. But I kinda want to get one that is cool just to have one. Like a 50 cal dessert eagle or something.

Figure might as well get something bad arse if I get one. Don't need practical because it will never get used. Live in a gated high rise condo with electric security locks, cameras, and 24/7 person on duty downstairs. Don't think there has ever been a break in or anything since the building was built so could care less about having one for home protection. Might as well go for cool factor since practical isn't there.

Ftr, never owned one. Grew up around and arsenal including m-16s, grenades, hand guns, and a shot gun and dad took me to therange to shoot. Dad was 30 year green beret.

Yes, because when seconds matter the police are only minutes away.

German Shepherd is probably the best deterrent there is. I took mine down South with me when I went back in 2005. I stayed at a rent house that we had and the neighborhood had gotten much worse over the 10 years I was gone. People would cross the street to avoid walking by this dog. Unfortunately someone poisoned her, and I was never able to bring her back to Ak.

Yeah, I was heartbroken. Should never have taken her down South with me.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion here but I don't believe the public should own guns. I'm an Army vet too with an expert rifle badge. I'll never have one in my home.

You're right. And it's not because you choose not to exercise your right to own one .... it's because you would not allow the rest of us to own one.

EIB ... lulz. Boyscout camp stuff. CIBs are worth mentioning.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Those dogs are amazing.
