I think that people who accept discrimination, especially as legally egregious as this example, just promotes more discrimination. Bigotry can be defeated only by continuous social pressure. Anti-discrimination laws are one form of this pressure.

Strongly disagree. It isn't going to make them change their views, it's going to embolden them.

I hate bigotry. I also disagree with the lifestyle of homosexiality. But call somebody a fig or have a course word towards homosexuals and you're a ahole in my book. But it's your God given right to be so. But that's all you should be.

Let society and the free market punish those people not the government. It's a lot more fair that way.

And I think that if someone can get away with ignoring the law, they'll be more likely to continue doing so. Humans are selfish by nature and want to have their way. We never quite grow up in that sense. That's why there are laws.

Even in this example, the couple operating the business recognize that the law has precedence. They're considering hiring someone to schedule the weddings so that they won't discriminate under the law but will also not violate their beliefs since they won't be involved with the process. It's a silly, IMO, but effective solution for them.

Why should you have to allow anyone to get married on your land?

If you want to marry people and don't want to marry gays, don't work in a state that permits gay marriage.

Problem solved.

They didn't refuse to marry the dykes, they refused to have a gay wedding ceremony on their PRIVATE(NOT PUBLIC) <------SWIDT, Property .

I'm not having any gay weddings on my property either. IT'S MY PRIVATE frickING PROPERTY.

If you live in Tennessee, you can operate a wedding business on your farm (if your local government allows) and exclude gay ceremonies since same-sex marriages are not legal in that state. Yet.

In the next few months, the U.S. Supreme Court will take up same-sex marriage in Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. The outcome will determine whether states can discriminate against gays regarding marriage.

If it's anything like a similar situation I read awhile back, it becomes an issue when people begin creating a business of renting their barns for events and then they fall under the umbrella of the state's discrimination laws from a business perspective,

I don't necessarily agree with the premise of the law, but it's still a law at that point.

Seems that way. Roger did a good job at explaining it ITT. I don't like the fine and I was disgusted at first, but it makes more sense now. Still think it's bullshite.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the law that tells a private business who they can service but it kind of is what it is. I'd hope someone running a business would be aware of it's state's discrimination laws before they do.

I'd rather know what businesses discriminate so I can choose not to frequent them. Antidiscrimination laws don't allow me to have that choice.

I believe businesses should openly discriminate. In my business, I discriminate against people who can't pay me.
