why are you people continuously clinging to shite that happened before the industrial revolution. You know how black folks are always told we need to let slavery go because it happened years ago. Well this is one of those times the pot is calling the kettle black. Why don't you all just burn all those damn flags and move on. You lost the war GET OVER IT!!!

Oh I didn't misunderstand anything. The fact of the matter is that there will always be two sides to the confederate flag and the south's role in the civil war.

White southerners will look upon that flag and think about those years when their ancestors bravely fought to protect their homeland.

Black southerners will look at that flag and think about the time when their ancestors were treated as property and were often killed for being black.

I truly believe that whites and blacks will never be able to completely understand the other sides' issue with the flag, unless they can some how change their ethnicity.

These flags, along with the region that it represented, has 2 sides. 2 stories. You can't have one without the other, and if we chose to not acknowledge one side we are tarnishing the history of the other.

Can we mutually agree to view the southern national flag as a symbol of southern pride...

First you need to explain to me what southerners have to be proud of. Getting their arse handed to them by Yankees is all I can come up with.

Ok, I understand this. And I liked your other point before on the previous post about 'why can't we find a symbol for southern pride that isn't about the civil war?' (paraphrasing)

So why can't we? I'd love a symbol or flag or something to be able to say 'this symbolizes the south and southern pride, etc'. Is there such a symbol? The only reason I suggested the confederate national flag was because it isn't liked to racism in popular culture, but still is a pre-existing symbol of the South.

To be honest I don't think we'll ever have a tangible symbol such as a flag as the region is too diverse for everyone to truly support. Our ideals are too broad. It's doubtful that people in Nashville have the same personality traits as people living in Miami (which IS a part of the south no matter what people may think).

Unless we have another major event that will completely unify everyone in the south (like the Civil War) it will probably never happen.

A friend and I had this discussion last night. Basically we think we just need a completely new symbol/flag for "southern pride." A flag with something that says "southern" without any relation to the civil war. We couldn't come up with a symbol but maybe y'all can. A oak tree? Who knows what it should be.

The only things that tie the south together is their pension for enslaving people, the bible and getting their shite pushed in by the union.

Not like u can have a flag of a cotton plant lol.

I.could get behind a flag with.some southern food.in it lol

I think a better question is why do black people celebrate the 4th lol. Not like we were free or anything lol. That was 175 years later

Being proud to grow up in a beautiful part of the country. Being proud of having manners like yes mam and no mam. People are actually friendly here unlike Boston, NYC etc.Having some of the country's best food. Home to events such as the Kentucky Derby, Bonnaroo, Mardi Gras, SXSW, and Talladega. Bourbon, the nectar of the gods. The word "y'all." The birthplace of blues and rock and roll. The warm weather and no real winters. Home to some of the most beautiful women. The list could keep going but I'll end it with this - the SEC! Sure, we've kicked ourselves in the balls over time but things are changing for the better; slowly but surely. I absolutely love living in the South and I wouldn't change it for anything
