Man I have had some less than stellar seat mates and I have probably been flying much longer. I have had some great interactions with less than stellar looking seat mates including some middle eastern security guys when this skinny blonde chick took my seat and would not give it up so I had to sit in hers. It was a great flight and the security guys were really cool.

Should've made the bitch take her seat or a different flight.

Can you pick your seat mates on other airlines that have assigned seating?
On at least one of the flights I looked at there is a row of first class seats on one side that is just all by themselves. For less than Business First at Southwest.

This was not to long after 9/11 and I was flying through RR on my way to Duke Medical. I am a big fellow (think lineman) and like to board late. Did not matter that these were tickets purchased well in advance and I was traveling with a sibling (different last names tho) and identical travel plans, and they were already sitting in the adjacent seat. She was petite blonde and attractive who had been assigned to sit between 2 burly middle eastern men and she was not going to sit there so took my seat instead.
Brought up all the circumstances about why she should be moved out of my seat but to no avail. She was a class a bitch but they would not move her to her seat but made me sit there instead. Was not happy but sat where she was supposed to and the folks sitting around me were all security folks for top middle eastern oil folks. They were on a tour of the US courtesy of the State Department and between my row and the one behind me it looked like the O line for an football team.

American almost broke their streak with me today. After American canceled my 6:08 out of MSP, I wormed into a 5:00 flight that left on time. We landed on time at OHare and I thought my streak was over. Then the jetway was broke and we sat at the gate for 15 minutes waiting to deplane. Then my flight out of OHare to STL was 15 minutes late.
The streak lives!!

Deltas ok, their problem is that their main hub, Atlanta, is a horrible airport
As someone who flies often domestic and international Hartsfield Jackson is one of the worlds best airports. On top of the fact for decades they are the worlds busiest airport.

American is notoriously bad for cancelling flights.

Yep, ATL moves more people than any airport in the world. It's runway configuration has been copied in later built airports. It's quite efficient.

All European airlines have gone downhill lately. SAS was one of the best. Now it is the worst.
Singapore, Cathay Pacific, JAL, ANA, Korean Air, Asiana >>>>>> KLM

No argument there. KLM is still better than US domestic airlines
Eta: and U.S. airlines flying international

7 things to keep in mind...
#1- A woman isn't going to make it 8 days with just a carry on. Go ahead and plan to check your bag. And if the gate is packed and the attendant asks for volunteers to check their carry-on for free, be the first in line. You've got to go to baggage claim anyway for your checked one when you land.
#2- On your travel day, don't get dressed up. You'll have to take it all off, then put it back on, in front of hundreds of other people. Keep it simple. Don't even bother with jewelry. You can keep your wedding ring on.
#3- For a two hour flight, who gives a shite if you are in coach or first class. Book a window seat (or aisle if you are incontinent) and order a jack and coke when the cart rolls through. Read the magazine, finish the crossword puzzle, and don't touch anything sticky. Unless you are a particularly large person who physically needs a bigger seat
#4- Hartsfield is only a clusterfrick the way you might think of a big college stadium to be a clusterfrick if you've only ever been to high school football games before.
#5- The nice lady in the Delta shirt who wants to ask you if you need help to find your flight doesn't really want to help you. She wants to sign you up for a credit card. Don't trust anyone that comes across as "nice".
#6- The bartender in PF Chang's in concourse A will be expecting you.
#7- Tampa is a shite hole.

I know a few women who UPS their luggage ahead if they are staying long. They swear by it as they have no hassle of toting stuff around or worry about it getting lost.

You probably didn't see where I said it earlier in the thread, but I'm sending my bags down with my parents who are driving down a couple days before me. Believe it or not though, I do make it with a large duffle.

I usually don't for that reason.

Fair enough.

That's kind of the impression that I got.

I will fight you. In all seriousness, I'm staying across the bay in the St. Pete area on the beach. We don't venture across the bay very often.

Whichever airline offers a direct flight is the best call.
They're all awful.
Southwest is still riding on a lot of good-will they developed when they were this weird little regional 20 years ago. But they're just another major now, only they have a bizarre, cattle-call-like boarding procedure and no assigned seats to add extra grief to the process.

Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad have taken the lead.
