we ranked states by the food/drink available in that state, focusing on four key questions:
1) What did they produce (beef, oranges, ugh, sorghum?),
2) What iconic items were they known for (key lime pie? onion burgers?),
3) What is their beer/wine/spirits production like (great breweries/wineries?), and finally
4) What is the food/drink scene like in their cities?

I would think unique restaurants and breweries/distilleries would be the best judge

Texas has phenomenal BBQ obviously, close enough to the gulf for fresh seafood, and we fry food that you didn't know could even be fried. Relax.

3 and 4 are the only ones that should matter for a competition like this, IMO.

There is absolutely no way that alabama, kentucky, tennessee, and probably missouri should be ahead of Georgia.

lived in Georgia for over 3 years, and outside of being known for burgers, peanuts, pimento cheese, and micro-breweries, i don't see anything unique to the state of georgia for food. tennessee should absolutely be above georgia

California is correctly #1. Other states perhaps have more inventive cuisine (although CA's is quite diverse), but you cannot beat California produce. It's truly amazing.

And at them saying Texas has its own version of chili. That's just called chili. Furriners add beans.

Missouri is ranked as high as it is because of BBQ, plus a lot of breweries like Boulevard and Schlafly, and believe it or not Missouri makes a ton of (not great and mostly sweet) wines. Some great restaurants in KC and StL too.

Burnt ends are our gift to the world. You're welcome.

Missouri seems to get a lot of credit for KC BBQ. I have no idea if that's warranted or not, so I can't really knock their spot. But I want to. That said, everyone bitching about KY being so high needs to do 2 things. 1) read the criteria, and 2) deal with the fact that we eat and drink better than you (except you, TX, LA, and apparently TN).

Memphis and Nashville both have excellent food/drink scenes.

The rest of the state is chain-centric, Knoxville and Chattanooga included.

Missouri does make some fine beers.

I think Arkansas is ranked low mainly because we don't have one strong identity. Northern Arkansas claims high south, and then we have the Delta, and western Arkansas is influenced more by Texas.
