So who's the #2 QB? Not who you want to see. Not who you think earned it. Who do you think the #2 QB will actually be on the depth chart tomorrow?

As much as I think Lock has earned it, I just feel GP sticks with Printz followed by Zanders and redshirts Lock.

Who you got?

Sounds like Lock is the #2, but only if Mauk goes down with an injury that would keep him out for a while.

Otherwise I think it's Printz.

Seems like there was a OL a few years ago that was the backup tackle as a true freshman, he never played. But he did practice with the second unit all season. I could see GP doing something like that with Lock this year.

Lock wouldn't have gotten the majority reps at 2 if he wasn't going to be 2.

I'd be very surprised if he wasn't 2 to start the year, and 1 at some point this year.

Mauk will get hurt this year. I see it coming.

Or he'll play bad enough to force the change.

Printz is gone at the end of the year.

Am I correct having thought a redshirt can be pulled at any time? So if Lock starts out redshirted, but is needed, he could be activated?

Also, what are the practice rules regarding redshirts? Would there be any benefit to him to not redshirt in this area?

That's what I'm going with is that they redshirt Lock this year and pull it if something drastic happens. I really don't think Pink has confidence in his backups, because he wouldn't give them any or much clock last year when he usually would give his top backup at least one series.

I am not so sure it is as much to do with the backups as it has to do with Lock. The guy is a stud. Trent Dilfer stated Lock was the best QB at the elite 11 camp last year. He is a fantastic athlete with great size and a cannon for an arm. THe fact that he already has the playbook down is insane. In a true battle (If MM was not the incumbent) Lock would win the job this year. With that said I think if it is just for one or two games or series I think Printz is the first man up. Long term? I think it would go Lock

I hope y'all are right. But I remember thinking the same thing about Mauk his true freshman year. I think conventional wisdom says it's Mauk but I'm just not sold GP will actually do it.

If Pinkel thinks Lock is gone after 3 then he's #2. If he's not sure, he redshirts him and pulls the shirt if Mauk goes down with something that would keep him out for more than 1 game.

Does anyone know enough about Lock to know if he's the type to leave early?

And exactly when does the clock start on his ability to leave? Three years from now, regardless of actual seasons played (redshirt sophomore or junior)?

If we're looking at Lock not redshirting and spending two of three seasons playing back-up to Mauk, eff that. Redshirt him to get two years as a starter out him.

If he's a first rounder after 3 years, he leaves. End of story.

This should've been in the College Football Welcoming Packet you received long ago.

If he redshirted, he could leave after his RS Sophomore year.

He's not backing up Mauk for 2 years. You can ship and book and mail and send that anywhere in the world.

To make it simple you have to be out of high school three years to be eligible for the NFL draft regardless of status in college. So If you take two years off from school then play 1 year of college football you could leave after your true freshman season. Lock will be will be eligible to enter the 2018 nfl draft.

Thanks for the clarification guys.

Given the clarification if I'm Pinkel I slow play Drew Lock and redshirt him this year, give him a series a half next year when Mauk is a senior, and then take my chances that he stays around for a second year as a starter after 2017.

Lots can happen between now and a future NFL career.

That said, if his talent is such that it can't be denied then I guess Mauk should be worried.

Well we can thank our lucky stars that you're not Pinkel.

What did I say that you see as the wrong way to play it?

I think Lock will be the 2, and I think he will get significant PT these first three games.

I wasn't onboard with this idea, but if a guy plays himself into a spot, you reward him. GP isn't dumb, he's been around a long time. He knows what the right move is here.

I also think the other QBs have recognized the talent Lock brings to the table. Anyone who has ever played sports knows when they see talent that can't be denied, even when it means your spot is in jeopardy. Transfers will be in order, but not because of disgruntled players, but because they know they have no chance of starting here.

Printz probably realized this when Mauk was getting PT in 2013, hence his year round enrollment, he can use the masters degree transfer rules to go somewhere else to start next year.

Zanders would be smart to start looking to move to another position, however, if he stays he could be Locks backup. I'd like to see him get used in some spots where his speed could be utilized this year.

Mauk will stay, lose his job by the end of the year, and backup Lock next year. He knows it, the coaches know it, and it won't be the end of the world for him.

The one real positive will be seeing Mauk perform with a bonafide QB breathing down his neck. Competition is a good thing, and the cream will always rise to the top in these situations.

Don't take it personal. I think he's just of the position of playing him right away.
