I don't see Mauk sticking around if Lock overtakes him.
He can go the graduate terra after route next year as well.

Hopefully Zanders stays.

I think Printz will be listed as number 2. He will be the one that comes in in the second half in the first few games.
No reason to use Lock's redshirt for that.

That said, if Mauk struggles they will bring Lock. Maybe they let Printz play a few series to see if there's a spark but if there's a real Mauk problem, Lock is the next starter.

Same way Pinkel did it with Franklin-Berkstresser-Mauk.

Thanks Reedus. I try not to take any of this give and take personally. It's just opinions. It'll probably sort itself out in due course anyway.

Given Pinkel's past track record of handling QBs I think the scenario I laid out it quite plausible. Unless Lock's talent is so great Pinkel breaks his past precedence of grooming replacement quarterbacks. And if he does I'm sure it will be the best decision for the team.

Me? I'm being greedy. I want Mauk to be great this year, relinquish a series a half to Lock next, and then for Lock to be a stud for the next 2-3 years after that.

In short, I'd like to see what the kid can do under live fire before we anoint him an NFL 1st rounder.

EDIT: By the way, does anyone know the time for the release of the updated depth chart? TIA

Here is why I think Lock redshirts.

You'll remember a few seasons back, yeah that ugly season. Our QB's were pretty banged up. Ran into a lady at the gas station in Mizzou gear who was flying high. Gave her the MIZ and got to talking to her. She was heading to COMO for the game and her son was the #2 QB for that weekend. He's currently a walkon WR, Laurent.

We had bowl eligibility on the line and if GP was going to go to those lengths to protect Mauk's redshirt (who every one was extremely high on as well), then I think he may very well protect Lock's redshirt as well.

Whatever happens I'm ok with it.

Mauk is fine in my book, and unless he regresses badly this season, we should be fine at QB. Whether or not GP redshirts Lock, if Mauk goes down, Lock will play. Especially if we have a shot at getting to ATL again.

I like where we are sitting in regards to the QB situation, and I've reached the point where I pretty much trust GP and his personnel decisions. There is a reason Printz didn't see much time last year, and I think we'll all see when he transfers that the staff was correct in their assessment.

That's perfectly reasonable, and follows what GP has done in the past.

It's a complete departure from what he's previously done, but I think Lock has forced his hand. He's clearly outplayed every QB we have in all of the scrimmages. I'm not one that likes to have a QB controversy but I think we very well may.

Am I correct having thought a redshirt can be pulled at any time? So if Lock starts out redshirted, but is needed, he could be activated?

Also, what are the practice rules regarding redshirts? Would there be any benefit to him to not redshirt in this area?

So the redshirt process is a bit different than everyone perceives it, but basically still works the same. So long as he doesn't play, he can redshirt.

Like Kyle Allen at A&M last season...."redshirted" for 6 games, and pulled it when Kenny Trill sucked. SO basically wasted 6 games of eligibility.

So yes, redshirt can be pulled at any time. I'd imagine he dresses for every game, even if he redshirts.

As for practice rules, there aren't really any. You could have redshirts practice with the first team offense all the time. So far as the NCAA is concerned, practice doesn't matter. Most redshirts play on the scout team though.

OK, I found out through a contact to Dave Matter that the new depth chart should come out around Noon.

A different QB wasn't going to help us in 2012. Frankly, I think Berkstresser was tarnished unfairly by that season. I'm not saying you are wrong about Lock redshirting, but using 2012 as an example of anything but a perfect (shite)storm just doesn't work.

Per Gabe... Depth chart coming out shortly before the 3:30 media scrum. LINK

BTW, Dave Matter was on 920 this morning and speculated Lock would be #3 and receive some playing time. Cited past precedence in the handling of Blaine Gabbert.

Don't get me wrong. I hope I'm wrong. But as much of a shite show as that season seemed we still could have become bowl eligible late in that season. Despite that GP still wasn't going to burn mauks rs. Not same situation here but does give an idea of GP's reluctance

Different situations.

Daniel was a SR. Patton was also a SR who had "earned it" by sticking with the program. Gabbert was assured of a starting spot the next year.

Don't see how it's even remotely comparable

Sounds like Lock at 3 w playing time is really a politically correct version of making him #2.

So we are going to play 3 QBs? Why? That just doesn't make any sense at all unless they are just worried about Printz transferring and they want to give him a faux backup job to try and prevent it.

I just don't see anyway they waste a RS on a kid to make him the #3 QB.

I agree with this, mostly.

If Mauk does a great job and doesn't get hurt (50-50 proposition), no reason to burn Lock's redshirt for mop-up duty.

BUT, if Mauk sucks or gets hurt, the situation is scrambled and it's probably Lock's job to lose.

Injuries happen. A lot. Reference 2012. Neither Zanders nor Printz will be thinking transfer until the end of the year.
