IMO, the best way to develop a strong sense of state pride is to live in a different state for a while. I was a proud Missourian before living out of state, but those three years helped me develop a fierce loyalty.
There's more truth to all of this than some of us want to admit though.
BTW: raised in the boonies over an hour north of STL, now lives further east than anyone else in my family, but still in the burbs.

I lived out of state for a number of years. I still consider myself a St. Louisan.
