Or we can just cry about everything that happens.

That's better.

Hint: Nothing any of us idiots on this message board says will make one iota of difference.

I just choose to not be miserable until there is a reason to be.

Now Gabe is saying it's $3 mil/yr not $3.5. Maybe some people can step back just a little from the edge of the cliff.

The years are pretty meaningless until we get the buyout figures.

I agree here. My guess is that the buyout on his end is high for 5 or so years and less so for us. That's why the salary (partly) is high.

And I choose not to be a member of the Mizzou marketing team. YMMV

If it's 3 mill I think that's a fair amount per year for him. If Illinois was inquiring that would sound about right.

I think this is a reflection on how deep the hole is as a basketball program and how the University is still viewed nationally in the wake of CS1950. And the attempt by the Michael Brown documentarian to reignite Ferguson doesn't help that belief.

Who'd want to walk into what's still perceived as a shite show unless you overpaid him?

EDIT: I'm also hearing from an insider friend that the Yolanda allegations have legs. So that would be another reason to have to overpay and go 7 years if more NCAA punishment is coming. FWIW.

I like him for his defense. So we hire an offensive minded mid major coach for a team who can't hit open shots and the coach will have to get his recruiting legs in short time. That doesn't seem ripe for success

That's the interesting thing about Martin. At MSU his teams were much better on the offensive side of the court. And played with some pace. He has really reversed course at Tennessee and California.

Had to beat out the Illini for him.

He's worth what the market dictates he is worth.

Illinois offered him what he was worth. We over paid because we're desperate. Has nothing do with the market.

But if someone wants something and wants it bad enough and has to out pay someone...that's the market price. Literally the definition

Assessed value is not necessarily market value.

Market price is what something is worth to the market. Just because I have sentimental value on a car and I'm willing to pay 20k more than it's worth has nothing to do with market value, it has to do with what i value it as. The market value for Martin is not 3+ million a year, Mizzou had to overpay because we're a dumpster fire.

That's partially true

But Sterk may know Crean is staying put and Marshall said no. Where else do you get a P5 experienced coach?

Illinois offered $3 million a year as well. Mizzou just offered an extra year.

I think it's a good hire. Relatively young for a head coach. Only has one losing season (His first) in 9 years as a head coach. I don't know a lot about the money issues. What I do know is that Mizzou has only got 27 wins in 3 seasons.
