No to the first one, yes to the final 3 but it's all irrelevant.

Start looking for some DCs to poach.

You actually think he brings in a DC and keeps his hands off? Because no good one is coming in to be a yes man.

My first thought is Strong ( don't hit me)

I think he's more than willing to let his DC run the defense. He let Cross do it until it became apparent that he can't get the job done.

D-line Mizzou. Why would a new coach change something that was a team strength? Was there a serious drop off of talent from last year to this year?
I don't understand what happened? But it needs fixing now!

Never mock Brock. Hardworking player. Might not have been a great politician but he was part of the larry smith resurgence that helped us convince pinkel to see a light at the end of a tunnel. He works with the chiefs now and is doing a great job on the special teams staff.

Gotta say. If barry loses more than 7, ...out. This team was not that far off from a bowl last year with a strong defense. Now we have a better offense and we have boneheaded mistakes like this? That's coaching.

If he can't do 5 wins, we arefricked longterm.

The whole new defensive scheme smells like the Ricker blocking scheme that had to be scrapped mid-season both years he was here.

Problem is this isn't a Cross scheme, it's Odoms.

I recall reading about Cross when he was hired. It struck me that he'd been with the Buffalo Bills, Sam Houston St., Iowa State, Kansas, Wisconsin, and TCU (maybe others, I don't recall)...but I didn't find anything that hinted that he was outstanding enough to be DC on a SEC team. And all those jobs was a bit worrisome.

But to the question. If Cross is only doing Odom's bidding, It will be hard for BO to can him so soon. If it's all on Cross, he still may get one more year. But no more than that.

Cross was hired because he ran the defense that Odom ran and Cross defense was one of the best in the country last year.

Well, more accurately he was a coDC (in title) but he ran Pattersons defense. Incidently, Patterson is the only HC I can think of who made the DC to HC transition work in his first HC job.

Because DLineZou was coach Kul, Odom is trying to establish his genius. Mizzou will never be a top 10 recruiting school but Kuls dlines helped make up for that. Those aggressive dlines kept our average linebackers from dealing with pulling guards, and QB pressure helped the dbs. By dismantling Kuls work he fricked up the whole defense.

Then...what happened? Are our players that bad this year?

Maybe they aren't that intelligent to grasp the new scheme.

I don't think I've ever advocated for someone being fired here. Errbody else is so far ahead of the curve on that I've never felt the need.

Cross's time has come.

and gone

So true.

College coordinators and assistants are trying to reinvent the wheel so they will jump to HC positions. They will stubbornly keep testing theories to see if they work. Ricker last year and cross this year.

Just fricking do it the old way and try to win now.

Should Pinkel have fired Dave Christensen a year after getting to a bowl game and the starting RB quitting because the Read Spread install wasn't terribly successful? I'm glad he didn't because two recruiting classes and two years of experience later, they were ranked #1 in the nation.

If the scheme was being executed properly, setting your hair on fire might be the thing to do.

It's not being executed. The DEs are constantly losing their spot by over penetrating. There is no Cover 2 run read responsibility any more on the corners. Other teams took advantage of it but MTSU ran the ball right at Harris knowing he would try to get around on the OT and take himself out of the play. The same simple run pass option all night long. He and Frazier did this repeatedly. Then it became a foot race to the edge between the RB and Cale Garrett.

Be disciplined and play your assignment. It's really simple.

Good points but one major difference. Christensen didnt dismantle a top 5 offense to install the spread. BO and Cross dismantled a top 5 defense with several returning starters. What is the logic of scrapping hours of knowledge, technique, muscle memory and most baffling good results and the teams national identity which helps recruiting.

BO was hired not because the program was bad but because Pinkel retired. His actions are of a new coach needing to start over with a bad program. And now it hurts recruiting as the former DLineZou has no DL commits.

I think people are understating how bad our safeties are. Our linebackers with Scherer out are mediocre at best. The reason this new scheme isn't working is because no one after the line of scrimmage can tackle.
