Also...Brewster for OC. Dream big.
He'd have to take a pay cut. He's makng more as a TE coach at FSU than Les did at OC. Not by much, but not near enough to be more attractive. I'm guessing he'd come back for 4-500k.
State needs to figure out a way to step up the OC & DC pay. Most SEC schools are paying position coaches more than we pay coordinators. Think Dan will take a pay cut?
I wonder what Kendal Briles is making or would consider leaving pops. That would be a pipe dream.

According to this recruiters list Brewster is making $290K. Is that correct?

Don't know...I was pretty much just joking. I don't see how giving Collins a 200k raise and getting an OC for 350-400k would break our bank though.

Rumor is Mullen went to Stricklin asking for another million for our assistants and Strick gave him around $500k for allocation however he saw fit.
That may/may not have been before we knew what was going to happen with Koenning as well...
Everything I've heard said that Collins will get $500k this year, which is still a little low(good base but needs incentives) -- but at least it puts us in the game. Would make him tied for 48th highest-paid assistant in the country on either side of the ball and probably a good bit harder to steal from us...

Cant wait to see who Mullen hires. IMO he has to get a big name and someone who can f'ing recruit
That being said BOL to Les but glad he is gone

The ROI on football has to be insane....no need to be cheap about it. Now I know we can't pay our coordinators Chad Morris money, but we should be middle of the pack.
If he gave him 500k plus the 275k that is freed up from Koenning leaving that should be plenty.

Don't get too excited. Like Req said, I wouldn't be surprised to see him promote Gonzalez. But surely this shitty recruiting class has shown him that he needs to get some big recruiters in here

Same here. He grabbed a couple of good recruits over the years -- but it wasn't consistent enough or often enough. Seemed to be a good, but lazy, recruiter.
Would have LOVED to get him the heck out before we wasted all of Tyler Russell's career though...

Mississippi State: With the departure of Les Koenning, it will be interesting to see how Dan Mullen proceeds. Will Mullen call the plays next year? Or will he hire a new offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach who will come in and call plays? Don’t be surprised if Mullen targets Louisiana-Lafayette offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson or Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks coach Frank Scelfo, whom Mullen reached out to a couple of years ago.
Per coachingsearch.com
at Mullen for trying to stick it to the man after his job.

Jay Johnson is the heir apparent to Hud over here, unless Orgeron becomes interested again.

Scelfo is older...not sure if he can recruit. But the guy is a hell of a QB coach. I think just about every QB he coached at Tulane played in the NFL at some point.
ETA: Apparently Nick Foles still keeps in touch with Scelfo too. Coached him at Arizona.

This depresses the fugging shite out of me. Are we that poor that we can't get people paid and go out and hire people that are the real deal?
If we consider ourselves no longer a doormate then we need to start paying staff like it.

Mullen calls the plays...whomever we hire will have to be comfortable with that.

So Mullen is QB coach, Call's the plays, coaches Special teams. Why do we need an OC at all then?

Whoever we hire needs to be a real deal qb coach that teaches things that mullen doesn't, like footwork. And needless to say, someone that has a proven track record in recruiting.

Ok, so this is just an idea, but I don't think it would really be that farfetched.
Hire Dameyune Craig from Auburn. He's currently their QB's coach and the number 2 recruiter in the country according to 24/7's recruiter rankings. He makes 350K a year, but with a title like OC shouldn't 400K do the trick, maybe with some incentives?
Surely he doesn't want to be a Trooper Taylor for his entire career and with Mullen calling the plays I would be ok with him maybe not having the experience for the job.

Im going to be pissed if Mullen doesn't go out and hire somebody.... Mainly for the recruiting part
Posted on 1/15/14 at 11:38 am to DynastyDawg
I would be ecstatic if we could get Craig
Posted on 1/15/14 at 11:47 am to DynastyDawg
Craig would be huge -- but we would definitely be relying on the title of OC to get him. No way we outbid Auburn for him. They'd almost certainly go north of $500k to try to hold him -- plus, he's an Auburn alum and already co-OC there. Would be a very tough pull for us -- but an absolute home run...
