Jim McElwain is 9-0 with his starting quarterback

MCLs and banned substances happen, I guess.

9-0. You guys gotta get a freaking grip. Relax. We're going to be fine.

Next year is gonna be a mess. The entire defense will almost be gone and this offense is average. Mac needs to clean house. We won't win big with this staff.

And this is where not capitalizing on his big year one with a huge or frankly even average (for Florida) recruiting class might doom Mac long term. Its realistic, hell its probable that, even if he's a good coach, with the current talent on roster and what we look to be bringing in this year Mac will post 3 years of steadily worsening rosters. This is where the Richt comparison is dumb-- Mark Richt won the SEC twice in his first five years including in year 2, he actually showed one hell of a lot of improvement both on the field and in recruiting before plateauing-- Mac hasn't. A better Mac comparison might be a lower ceiling Gus Malzahn.

With a rebuilding defense and an offensive line that even his biggest backers will tell you is likely to still be in the learning phase here's Mac's probable first 3 years (and remember this is with the 3 worst recruiting classes we've had since we started tracking them)

2015: 10-4
2016: 9-4
2017: 8-5

This brings us to the 2017 offseason where for recruiting purposes Mac will need an extension, and remember basically all of the national title winning coaches still coaching won National and/or Conference titles in year two-- just like basically every good coach (and some bad ones) has their big bump recruiting class in year 2-- which means Mac's big year-- the one you use to see what kind of recruiter he can be once he has on the field results to sell recruits on is fringe top 10, middle of the pack in the SEC and second in the state of Florida.

Heck its a real possibility that over the next 2-3 seasons Mac has us 3rd in recruiting in-state.

If we had an older team, we'd've been just fine. We Appleby got his first start with us, there isn't a single offensive line player who won't be back next year and we have four running backs with limited experience.

We need one more year, and anyone who was objective knew that

The problem with this is that the defense is likely to take a pretty huge step back next year-- so we really can't judge then either. Watch next season if we're getting lit up people will excuse it by comparing it to Meyer's 2007 team: "You guys probably wanted to fire Urban and Charlie after 2007, just wait til next year"

The other problem is that, at least on paper, each year Mac coaches we become less talented because of his subpar recruiting.

Let's first take care of Vandy, which will most likely not be a cakewalk. I also think LSU, Mizzou and UGA are all toss ups. FSU and Arky are losses. I see 8 and 4 at best.

They are toss ups as of today, but if this staff is the right one for UF, they will win all three.

What say you if we go 8-4 or even 7-5??? Is McElwain still your guy? Like Muschamp was your guy even after he lost to Vanderbilt???

Dude if Muschamp got another year after 4-8 then Mac will get next year if he goes 8-4.

Im willing to give him another year

But id like to see the recruiting step it up, especially in the state of Florida.

This will be the first yr with a QB. Next yr will be the better sample with the players in the system with a yr under their belt.

People barking about recruiting...well my O&B glasses are probably blurring my vision...but I see things a whole lot differently.

Mac has hit the JUCO trail better than any Gator coach imo and thats important...it usually flies under the radar in recruiting, but has been important. Senior transfer QB Appleby is another example of getting talent here and I shudder to think what would have happened if he hadnt been here when LDR went down. Im a little concerned about defensive recruiting...but Im sure we will land some good ones and already well on our way to getting a lot of DBs which was necessary and the last class had LBs as one of the important areas....Reese is going to be a stud, Joseph & Moon ditto imo.

When people complain about OL....its difficult to recruit when you just had 3 true frosh play and start games. Kids wanna play right away and look at our depth chart or have rivals point out our roster.

Imo 3 yrs is not enough to really judge a coach if we are having mostly success...4 yrs is the benchmark and by then we will know what we have and there should be improvement. Mac knows he has to produce, every coach in the SEC knows that and except for Vandy...expectations are high. Hard to judge Vandy because they are so focused on academics and really dont have much of an athletic dept or spend any funds on sports.

I myself think we have the right coach in place and he has a demeanor that relates well to players and remember he still doesnt have his own players yet on the roster and every coach wants their own kids. We can be 7-1 after UGA and then we will see if the players and coaches have learned the lessons of being on the road against tough SEC opponents when we travel to Ark.

Reel - I don't look at how many years a coach has. I look at is the team improving as the season progresses. Are the boys being trained up. Are we still doing stupid stuff game after game, year after year?

Well, I guess it could be worse. At least Florida fans are just manic instead of completely insane like the LSU folks.

They should start handing out prozac with alumni group memberships.

PS - He's getting three years regardless short of Patrino-like scandal. No big program is firing a coach in just two years. If the boosters at Texas couldn't oust Strong after his second season, it sure as hell isn't happening at Florida. Some of y'all should seriously save yourselves the heart burn.

The new AD may not be as forgiving as Foley.

It's headed that way already under the current staff. Both in team play and recruiting

That we have multiple people saying the coach should be on his way out tells me that we're a little crazier right now.

Gonna be funny when we get at least 9 wins this season.

Kelvin Taylor ran for 1000 yards and 13 TDs behind that line.

The OL sucked so why keep summers?

Macs first year is like WM in 2012. A fluke until proven otherwise

What? That's not how any of this works. That's like reel excluding the Sugar Bowl loss for WM. We went 11-1! Mac's 13-5.
