Tanner has already made his first phone call, for this move Spurrier just made, we already had a chip in place elsewhere.

I'd love for it to be Dantonio, probably a long shot but with ties to the University he may listen

After Holtz and Spurrier, I really want a young energetic up-and-comer.

Dantonio is a great coach, but he has serious health issues.

I say go high-risk, high-reward with this guy:
LINK

A talented recruiter, Briles was named the Big 12 Recruiter of the Year in both 2013 and 2014.

Briles earned multiple Big 12 Recruiter of the Year awards in 2014 (Rivals, Scout, 247Sports) after Baylor signed a class ranked 22nd nationally by ESPN and 23rd by Scout.

Briles mentored four All-Americans and five total NFL prospects during seven seasons as wide receivers coach

Could be our own little Dabo - WR coach, enthusiastic, salesman (Swinney is an annoying jack leg dipstick, sure, but he knew how to build a staff and bust his arse and get recruits).
Might even be able to recruit Texas for us.

What does everyone think of California's coach Sonny Dykes?

Would be good if Tony Franklin Came with as OC/QB.

Justin Fuentes(sp) will be the biggest up and coming name this year.

Jimmy Sexton will be getting paid this year.

How many games does Mangus have to win to get serious consideration for the job?

Beat Vandy
Beat one of either UF/UT
Keep it respectable at A&M

If he does that, while beating Clemson at home, I could see the possibility of him Dabo-ing into the job. A Clemson win would be massive.

Yea I was thinking bowl eligible with a win over Clemson would have him in a toss up with Mr. Outside Hire

100% in on Justin Fuente, the record speaks for itself. Young, good recruiter, great coach. Makes way too much sense for where we are as a program right now for us to go after Fuente with his track record at Memphis. He honestly makes all the sense in the world and should be Tanner's first phone call

If not him, go after Tom Herman, guy is going to be a star, you can see how Ohio State is struggling without him there (even though I fear he wouldn't stay long and would jump for the next really big job).

If those 2 fail then I'd go get Kirby Smart and surround him with a great staff

Maybe go with D.J. Durkin (his defenses speak for themselves) get him a good OC and we're set

The last thing we need is D'Antonio especially with his health issues

For all out fun PJ Fleck (Western Michigan) would be the most entertaining coach in CFB if we're looking for pure entertainment/energy value (and following Spurrier we'd have the entertainment category locked up). Plus he's young and can really recruit (super high risk/potential reward)

This is a rebuilding job, with great facilities and untapped recruiting ground in North Carolina (need to make this a focus), Virginia, and GA and Florida with a stellar 2018 in state class on the way

Exactly! If a couple phone calls and back alley handshakes weren't already made, this would not have come to light.

The early step down signifies something is already in the works and this is an effort to get the jump on recruiting and setting up staff moves... etc.

Level 1. Chip Kelly, Saben, Urban Meyer, Bill Bellicheck, Gary Patterson, Mark Dantonio

- Chip Kelly might not be available. If he is even fired from the Eagles, So Cal will go all in for him. His recruiting network is west coast, so I would expect him to take that job.

- Saban...maybe if Holtz and Spurrier give him a ZJ, a membership to Augusta, and they bet him he couldn't win the NC here.

- Urban, I think he's osu for life or until they get caught up in a scandal where they have to fire him.

- Bellichek, I don't think he would be the best recruiter.

- Gary Patterson, if we don't at least ask, we're doing this all wrong. Our of all the guys in Level 1, he may actually be he most realistic at this point in time, and even then, it's not a good shot.

- Mark Dantonio, we all know the info, he's going to get a call, we'll see what he says. Probably almost as likely as Patterson.

- Gruden, everybody says his name for all schools when they have a vacancy. He gets paid a lot of money though by ESPN for just saying what he thinks. I don't know if he'll ever coach again.

quote:

Level 2. Herman, Kirby Smart, Mark Stoops, Dave Doeren, Doc Holliday (keeps rising his stock,)

I think we could get any of these guys.

Herman - Pro's are that his team/offense is an elite level, he's a good recruiter, young, energetic and hungry. Con's are his defenses aren't great, he's only been a HC for 1 season,

Smart - Pro's, defenses would be great in a year or 2, big name recruiter, can build successful staffs around him at least on defense. Con's are he hasn't been a HC before.

M. Stoops - Pro's are kent is #2 in the SECe right now, he did that at kentucky.... Good recruiter, beat us out for several guys we wanted. Con's, took him several years to get to this point, he still has a losing record after 3 seasons. However, if he has a similar record to Fuente at the end of the year, wouldn't Stoops be more impressive?

Doreon started this season hot, but lost his last 2 games. He has a Top10 Defense, but they've only played 2 decent teams. He took a team from 3-9 his first year to 8-5 and now he's at 4-2. He also beat us out for some recruits we wanted the past couple years.

Holliday - He keeps winning games. He's from the Urban Meyer coaching tree and was UF's recruiting Coordinator when they were winning the BCS's. He's older now though. If he was 10 years younger, he would be my #1 choice at Level 2.

This is who I thought UF was going to hire initially. I get the age thing but USC needs to keep the ball rolling. The SEC is a different level than any other conference. I think SEC experience is a must.

a few other names

- Kyle Whittingham - Utah - The Urban Meyer protege has done an excellent job at Utah and is one of the top head coaches in the game today.

- Pat Fitzgerald - Northwestern - The Northwestern alumnus has done a great job of building his program and is known as a coach players love to play for.

- Matt Campbell - Toledo - The 35-year old boasts a 31-13 record at Toledo, including a 5-0 record this year. Known as a great offensive mind.

- Pat Narduzzi - Pittsburgh - The former Michigan State defensive coordinator is in his first year at Pitt and is 4-1 thus far. Helped build the Spartan program into what has become and has been a very successful defensive coach during his career.

And Bobby Petrino is not going on the list. I don't Tanner would hire him and his buy out is hilariously huge at Louisville

Below I put a list of everyone mentioned in this thread. I linked to their wiki page so you could see more about them (those summaries are easier to scan than their school bio pages.) I also put their current salary, overall record and record in the 3 most recent seasons (except Chip's.)

Current HC Candidates (P5 or NFL)
Gary Patterson - HC TCU - $3.5M - (138-45, 22-9 last 3 years.)
Mark Dantonio- HC Mich St - $3.6M - (99-48, 30-3 last 3 years...wow.)
Chip Kelly - HC Eagles - $6.5M - (46-7, 36-4 last 3 years at Oregon.)
Mark Stoops - HC Kentucky - $3.26M (11-18)
Dave Doreon - HC NC State - $2.2M - (38-20, 15-16 last 3 years.)

Bobby Petrino - HC Louisville - $3M - (94-37, 19-11 last 3 years.)

Current HC Candidates (non P5)
Chad Morris - HC SMU - $1.3M - (1-5)
Tom Herman - HC Houston - $1.45M - (5-0)
Mark Hudspeth - HC ULL- $1.05M - (104-39, 20-11 last 3 years)
Justin Fuente - - HC Memphis - $1.4M - (22-20, 18-11 last 3 years.)

Current AHC or Coordinator Candidates
Shame Beamer] - AHC/RB/Rec Coord Va Tech - $244K

Bud Foster - DC Va Tech - $1.4M

Good news, none of these guys is out of our price range (as long as Kelly comes down from his NFL level salary.)

NCAA HC Salaries

We also commit $3.33M for Asst Coaches Salaries, that puts us at #13 nationally. We can afford a Top Tier support staff.
