Although it's possible, I don't see Kelly coming here. He has no ties to the South, and I'm sure at least one more high profile job would be available. I could even see Oregon taking him back before him coming here.
Also, I don't get the love for Herman, Morris, or Smart.
Herman - has coached a whopping 5 games as a HC. He also only coached under Meyer for 2-3 years, so can't even really claim him under his coaching tree which has been successful. I'd like to see what he does for a couple years first.
Morris - see Herman (although I think he was the HC at Tulsa for a bit?) I know SMU is a tough place to coach, but has he even won a game this year? Also a member of the Malzahn coaching tree, and we are watching that disaster unfold as we speak.
Smart - never been a HC and has been a DC under one of the GOAT for a number of years now. 1 - how much has really been him? 2 - I'm sure he's had offers; why hasn't he taken any?
I like Steve Addazio, although he's a bit older than we should shoot for. Didn't know much about Fuente until these threads started, but he's growing on me. I think we should give Dantonio a call out of respect, but I don't see him leaving.

Perception is everything in this search. It is imperative that it appear (if it's not the case) that Spurrier retired. And it is also imperative that it appear that Tanner knew his guy, offered him, and got him. Foley snagged McElwain quickly last year, while UTK had a series of high profile rejections. This job needs to look attractive right out of the gate. If Dantonio is target No. 1, then that contact needs to be ultra discreet in the very realistic scenario that he's too entrenched at State to want to leave.
Herman is getting love because of much better Ohio State's quarterbacking was last year vs this year with the same players, and how well he's recruiting at Houston. Only having one year of head coaching experience doesn't concern me (look at Freeze or Malzahn), especially if current coordinators such as Beamer or Smart are being considered.

My problem with coordinators and first year coaches is that plenty of them have had success early and Peter out after a couple years. Sometimes, just being a fresh face is enough to turn around a team in the short term after a couple bad seasons.
I understand getting a young coach involves high risk and reward, and we probably need to take a chance. However, if we are going to throw 3-4 mil at a guy, I feel there should be some body of evidence of his worth beyond a few good games. I at least want to see 2-3 years of program improvement which is why I'm warming up to a guy like Fuente.

I'd like for us to look at the following...
Chip Kelly (if fired from Eagles this year)
Mark Dantonio (at least reach out and make a call, likely won't leave Michigan St.)
Kirby Smart
Tom Herman
Justin Fuente
Mark Hudspeth
Bryan Harsin (Heavy Boise St. background, not likely anyway)
Doc Holliday

Worthwhile read on Justin Fuente
Dude spent a good bit of time learning from Patterson.
Sounding better by the minute.

The Memphis coach as moved up to my favorite
They have an elite offense and play great defense. I truly believe he is a future coaching star.

Been hearing Dan Mullen's name thrown around the last few days, thoughts anyone?
I'm kinda "meh" to the idea, but he's done a pretty good job at Mississippi State & he has to deal with that SEC west gauntlet every year.

Nahhhh.
Besides, Mississippi State is in a better position than us right now. I don't see why he would even leave them for us.

I do not want Muffin. He has done well at Miss State, but I'm not totally sold on him. I kind of agree with Gcockboi about Memphis's coach. I like his style of offense, but his defense is kind of lacking imho. I'm going to try to do more research on him later to see how he has recruited and what his coaching history is.

Speaking of Athlon Sports they made an updated list today on the top 10 up & coming coaches.
Top 10 Up & Coming CFB Coaches
Really liking Herman & Fuente more & more. Think they're my 3 & 4 behind Dantonio & Smart.

Interesting article on one of the top candidates, Kirby Smart.

Smart, generally considered among the top recruiters in the country, said coaches get some down time in the NFL due to rules set up in the collective bargaining agreement that limit their time with players. In college football, any time not spent with players is typically spent trying to find more.
"I've got recruits that will text and call and do everything in the middle of the night. And I'm thinking, I'm with my family. But you've got to dedicate time to that or you can't do it," Smart said. "I get a direct message on Twitter: 'Coach, I'm coming to Tuscaloosa in a week.' And I'm thinking, well I'm not going to be there. I'm on vacation. You've got to find somebody to cover up and go spend time with him. Because if you don't, somebody will.
"That's the part where I say college coaches are always looking to go, because if you're not a niche recruiter, or as you get older and less active as a recruiter, you become less valuable. ... It's constant and you always feel like it's fourth-and-1."

SMU vs Houston tonight as one of the Thursday night CFB games, good look at Chad Morris & Tom Herman.

I like fuente. I heard patterson said he was the single hardest work coach he has ever worked with. Thats enough for me at this point. Like herman too.

Watching this NC State game tonight got me thinking about Dave Doeren.
43 y/o
Went 23-5 in 2 yrs @ NIU, they also reached the Orange Bowl his second yr.
In his 3rd yr w/ NCSU, won 8 games & a bowl last year. Has his team off to a 4-1 start.
Not saying he's a definite, but maybe if they continue to win games then maybe he gets talked about more?
ETA: As soon as I talk good about them they give up 14 straight and are down 11 at the half.
