So....having a mobile QB (ala TN) allows you to get by with a lower quality OL. That explains their success with a smaller OL talent pool. The rest of these breakouts support your thesis.
Not really. Just the opposite, really. Florida doesn't support it, either. And LSU recruited better, but their OL is pretty bad, too. Fournette is struggling to run the ball. The only team that is doing well with the scenario is Alabama, and that is because the recruit like they do.
When it comes to OL, I think a good bit comes down to developing them. That's one reason the Pittman hire was such a good one. I am thinking we will see improvement next year. they are patching together an OL right now. All in all the OL is not as bad as many believe, but it certainly isn't great, either.

on't think the Smart hire was about saving money.
And you may be right. But it's been a long, long time since Georgia hired a coach who was previously a HC. It worked out with Richt. He took us to another level. Now we are hoping another assistant can take us one more level. However, truth be told, it is much harder to get to the next level from where we are now.

Just my opinion.
Like I said...you may be right. All we can do is speculate.

We have developed the Perfect Storm of offense purgatory. Immobile QB, small receivers that can't get open and a bad OLine.

Bama didn't wait 15 damned years to try and achieve greatness. CMR is a good man, but if you can't see that it wasn't working, then I'm not going to try and convince you. Kirby may not be the answer, but I'm going to give him more than 4 games to prove it.

I said above that Mark Richt was a good man and a good coach. I didn't say great, and if we had an experienced head coach with a good track record in mind, it would have at least been a decent gamble. This was a way long shot IMO, and given this choice I'd have kept Richt.
Valid logic but experienced head coaches weren't exactly lining up for the job and our admins would not have been willing to pay them what would attract them in the first place. As such, it was reasonable to go with an alumnus who had long term success as a DC under the best in the business, Saban. Yes, we don't know if Smart will have the what it takes to become a great HC but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I have tempered my expectations knowing:
1. First year HC.
2. Best QB is a Freshmen in the SEC.
3. Receiving corp is lacking.
4. Our best RB is coming of major knee surgery.
5. OL is not good even though they are being coached by an experienced and successful OL coach. Hopefully they come around.
6. We lost our pass rushing specialists and no one has stepped up to fill that void so far.
7. Our DB's are decent but we don't have any shutdown type corners so we will struggle against taller more athletic receivers.
8. Our kicking game uncharacteristically is just plain bad.
Conclusion: Even if we had kept Richt, this likely would have been one of his off years. Of course we will never know but my guess is Richt would have had a similar record that Smart will have with our current personnel.

We'll really never know which HC's had shown interest in the job or not and I
don't think money would have been a deciding factor if a Tom Herman was interested.
UGA is certainly a premier job and I can't imagine there weren't experienced coaches who didn't show interest.
KS was the primary target from the beginning but we knew SC was in the picture for em
and it made us pull the trigger that much quicker...not the best way to choose a HC IMO.

So if he's your primary target and someone else is making a move on him, you don't pull the trigger and risk losing your primary target. Don't understand that logic.

Because you're limiting your options by choosing a DC as a primary target.
UF didn't do it with McElwain,Bama didn't do it with Saban,UT didn't do it
with Butch Jones,AU didn't do it with Mahlzan.
The only 2 DC's with a history of success (if you want to call it that) in the SEC in the last
40 years are Mike Archer at LSU and Duboise at Bama and neither was sustained.

rated 4* or better, and Ole Miss has 6 players rated 4* or better. Granted two of Ole Miss' players are 5* and we have none, currently. But they also lost 1 of those 5* to the draft last year, so that makes it even closer. And if you are willing to rate Gaillard as a 4* on the OL, then we have 7, one more than Ole Miss. I don't think it is too far fetched to rate Gaillard (A 5* DL)as a 4* OL.
Galliard was a 4 star dt who couldn't cut it there, so he was likely overrated. He should have been an upperclassmen starter for us against the ole miss OL. Instead, our dl is too young to take advantage of any OL.

Gaillard was 5* until a high school injury. Then downgraded.

Should have been downgraded to 3 star, which is where rivals had him. When rocker gives up on you, you aren't very good.

But he's been a decent OL. I mean, he hasn't had a lot of experience on the college level, and there is a huge difference in HS and College. especially at the SEC level.

Well, he's a starting guard at UGA so he is obviously awesome.... right?

Not bad for his experience level, though. I haven't really watched him a whole lot, so I don't know how well he has done. Ole Miss seemed to loosen up the numbers in the box last week. If that continues and gives the offensive line some breathing room we will see them improve as the season goes along. With so many players in new positions it is difficult for them to recognize and pick up the stunts and blitzes the defenses are running against them. I suspect our opponents had that in mind when they brought everybody up in the box.

Baker was primarily at DT in high school. Gaillard primarily a DT, too.
These kids are having to be coached everything about the OL position at the college level. That is not a high probability for success.
