...better, a little. I like your use of the word "shade" there.

More? There's got to be something else I misspelled somewhere for you to point out.

Edit: the upvote is mine.

You and most of the rest of us. Football is fun too, though, and winning at it is more fun.

He's right though. There are really only eight blueblood programs in college football: Alabama, Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas and Nebraska. SEC schools such as LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia and Auburn are all a notch below those schools historically. Alabama has almost twice as many conference championships as the school with the second-most conference championships (Tennessee). Alabama has 11 national championships in the Poll era. No other SEC school has more than three. There's a bigger gap between Alabama and the second best SEC program (LSU/Tennessee) than there is between the second best program and the sixth best program (Auburn). So his comments about Alabama being the Big 1 is 100% true.

Yea, I don't understand why people get so rustled by this fact or someone bringing it up.

The next 5 are all very close in terms of all the major categories. They are all bunched together and all have various head to head leads against eachother. Alabama is not bunched together with them in any category, they are far ahead in all of them.

Nah. That used to be the case, but the gap has essentially disappeared. It all depends what you value. If wins are most important (primarily wins against an easier schedule), then yes programs like Michigan are clearly ahead.

But Florida, Florida State, Miami, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn have clearly closed the gap during the last generation.

Michigan has just two national titles. That's the same number as Tennessee and Auburn... one less than both LSU, Florida, and Florida State... and 3 less than Miami.

Michigan started playing football in the 1870s... long before the sport was heard of in the South. If playing all those years just after the civil war and racking up wins makes them a superior program, then by all means go with that.

But the gap between those programs (as well as Penn State which has been left out) has shrunk to the point its not significant enough to call a gap anymore.

There are 16 elite programs in CFB.

No that's the point. Most of the rest of Bama fans attach their self-worth to the football program. It's by far a majority.

And the fact that you felt the need to start this thread in the first place so that you could obtain validation proves you've got some symptoms of the same syndrome that plagues the vast majority of bama fans.

Interesting that you know a majority of Alabama "fans". This is a very scientific result you have come up with. And, by extension, you know a majority of every other SEC fanbase and those individual's "self worth valuation" model to be able to compare. Sounds like something you should publish.

Yes, I clearly needed validation for my self-worth which is all but reliant on other message board posters reverence towards Alabama football and it's accomplishments, which is why I posted this thread on a message board at 8:30 AM on a slow Friday morning. You hit the nail on the head. I'm going to have to go back and re-evaluate everything based on your findings.

Think there is a Big 6, but there certainly is a gap between Bama and the other members.

However, instead of going back to 1980, I like to go back when divisions were set in place in 1992. Here are some stats since '92 (includes vacated wins):

Bama- 224-83. 5 national championships, 6 SEC Championships, 20 bowl games.

Auburn- 201-91. 1 national championship, 3 SEC Championships, 16 bowl games.

Florida- 220-76. 3 national championships, 7 SEC Championships, 23 bowl games.

Georgia- 213-88. 0 national championships, 2 SEC Championships, bowl games,

LSU- 213-94. 2 national championships, 4 SEC Championships, 19 bowl games.

Tennessee- 200-99.1 national championship, 2 SEC Championships, 20 bowl games.

Actually, as of July 2015, LSU and Arkansas lead the SEC each with 43 NCAA Division 1 championships.

Alabama isn't even in the top 25 on that list.

Oh, wait, I forgot that only football matters to gumps. My bad.

Yep, until 2000ish we were pretty poor in the non-Big 3 sports.

However, over the last 10 years I believe we are 2nd only to Florida in national titles with 9 national titles in 5 different sports.

This has never been said by a fan of a championship-winning team. I see you, L U folks, etc. saying this an awful lot.

I wonder why that is?
