I don't know a thing about weights or nutrition either and just took up running. Just mid 40's and decided I wanted to live longer
I'm lifting a little now because once I ran for 5 months and had shed what you called the "fat suit" I wanted to tone up.
None of my business clothes, suits, jeans, t-shirts fit anymore, they all look huge and baggy on me I can get my suits tailored but I'm having to buy new jeans and come to terms with giving up my favorite t-shirts for new ones that are a size smaller

When you run early in the morning at 5 or 6, do you eat anything first?

I drink a cup of coffee, read for a bit, take a gator and hit the road. I've never been able to eat before a run.

Depends on how long I am going to run but if I am trying to drop pounds, I do empty stomach cardio about 4 days a week. That means if I am only going to run/ride for 30-40 mins, I do not eat anything. IT will help you drop some pounds. If you are going to do any high intensity training, you may want a little something.
If your going to lift, absolutely eat.
I dropped a lot of weight and probably got in the best shape of my life about 12 years ago. Trained with a guy who knew his shite. He had me on the empty stomach cardio for a while. Did fantastic for me. If you are going to do some kind of high intensity training early, IE, plyometrics or similar, you may want to eat a few calories.
I am doing the early morning cardio now about 3 days a week and I dont eat before. My cardio is either running, elliptical or I use a old fashion rowing machine. All at a steady pace with HR control...

Sorry sarge missed this. 21:59. Better than I was expecting, but after that first mile my goal switched to sub 20. Body just wasn't ready. Back started to really hurt, and a church 5k wasn't worth not being able to sit in a chair for a week, so I decided to hit a quick 30 second walk.

So I did my third day in a row of running without a day off, that first mile sure is harder without the day of rest
I've also noticed that I run slower with my softer more cushioned shoes, I think they make me feel too comfortable taking bigger but slower steps and lifting my knees higher. Where with my firmer and more worn down shoes I take faster but small steps and keep my feet much closer to the ground trying to minimalize impact with the lightest steps possible.
And running in the cooler mornings really has gotten me closer to normal but the humidity is still a bear.
Should I stretch my strained hammy to help it heal faster or will that only make it worse? Any recommendations on how I can help it? It was super tight this morning for that first mile.

Stretch a little longer, and start slower than you usually do before gradually ramping up your pace
Also I don't recommended running more than 2-3 days in a row if you can help it.

I'm in the minority, but I feel better after running in the heat/humidity. It's a bitch and I can't run as far but I feel like I got such a better workout afterward. I have to go HARD on a treadmill or when it's cool to get the same effect.

I'm with ya (well, when I was able to distance run ).
Always ran faster times in the cold, but felt better in the heat.

I also get bad chest pains sometimes when I run in the cool/cold, I'm bad about not breathing through my nose to warm the air and it starts getting to me after a mile or two.
Running on pavement in general has gotten harder recently, I have mid/upper back pain from sports and crappy genetics (both parents have back issues). The force of running does a number on it sometimes. I use ellipticals more than I used to because it's easy on my back.

Yeah I had to switch my shoes to keep with it, the ones I had gave me too much impact. Luckily and I am kinda addicted to Slickdeals so I got some on sale right as I started running.
So my wife tells me the other day "you approach the gym like a 50 year old woman." And I guess I can't disagree with her, I prefer the machines to free weights. Actually my favorite thing so far about any of this has been the rowing machine there. That thing is a blast and no one ever uses it, which means I must be running up against some sort of social stigma I assume.

Yeah I'm pretty much all-in on the stationary bike for my cardio these days. Still play basketball semi-regularly, but the aches/pains are starting to make it more of a chore than the fun it's supposed to be, so I'm probably going to see my playing time decline more in the coming years. C'est la vie, I guess.

I like it too but it killed my distance. Going from 10 miles to 5-6 hurts my pride
