The older I get the more I appreciate elite level athletes and what they do. I'm 27 and many players are in the prime of their careers at my age. I can't even imagine doing that now, let alone when I'm 35-40. Even if I had the skills, my knees and back would give out after a couple games.

I'm 45 and have the body of a 24 year old after only 6 months, you can do it Roger. I want to see you in the NBA next year!

I've always tried to maintain a good fitness level, the consequences of that just grow with age

The thing I need to work on is my diet, I've never watched what I eat because I haven't really needed to. I know that will change as I age though and I eat way too much junk food, carbs and saturated fat.

I also hate fruit in general. Love veggies and dairy and breads and meats, but there are about two fruits I'll eat. It limits healthy eating options

I need to develop a taste for more produce because it's one of the few "quick" healthy things not requiring preparation. I need to give up the breakfast sandwich or snack bar for an apple.

I did watch my saturated fat intake and went on a fiber supplement for about six months last year and my cholesterol plummeted to like 120 total, so I know it's relatively easy to stay health with minimal diet changes.

If you want quick and healthy with a lot of fruit consumption get a Vitamix and make smoothies. I freeze bananas, strawberries and blueberries and every morning I make a protein smoothie with that and some kale (acquired taste) and some seeds. Faster than making a sandwich but better for you than a snack bar.

A good easy fix is buy a bunch of canned pears and peaches in light syrup, keep them in the fridge chilled. Quick and easy to grab on the go. Throw in a couple handfuls of raw almonds and you are set.

Ditto. Blows my mind when I look at guys like Duncan or Dirk at see them still out there hooping with the fresh legs. And you and I have nowhere near the miles on our body guys like that do

Just remarkable.

Ran around the entire Quad today. About to go and play basketball for the 3rd time in a 4 day span. I was 210 in February, now weighing 202 now. Not bad, but I miss eating BBQ.

Hi all. Old Sarge pointed me this way and I wanted to stop by and introduce myself and give a little history and my current progress.

The day after Christmas last year I was a heavy meal away from 300 pounds. That really broke me. So I decided I was going to do something to stop growing out and start getting fit. I started working out at first just by walking the ramps in my parking garage at work at lunch for 30-40 minutes. I cut my portion sizes down and cut out soft drinks. I only drink on special occasions now like birthdays anniversary etc.
Back in January I knew I would need a goal more tangible than the nebulous get healthy; so I made a deal with my wife. When I get to 240 pounds I get a new hunting rifle. So with that goal in mind I started going to the gym every morning before work to do elliptical work for 30-40 minutes and still do my garage walking at lunch. I am 8 pounds form my 240 goal. Hoping to reach it before the end of the month. However, I don't want to stop there. I really want to get into good enough shape that I can do mountain hunts and other outdoors type stuff. So mu ultimate goal is to maintain between 185 and 200. I want to get there and build good functional strength while doing it.
Does anyone have a favorite plan or program they do that builds functional strength? I'm not really concerned about bulk or size because I don't want to add too much weight. More interested in function endurance and strength. Thanks in advance for any knowledge.

Hey AgBQ00, welcome.

First off congrats on your weight loss, that's an amazing job!

It sounds like you are to the point where you definitely need to add in some weight training. My best suggestion to you is to do a 3 day split of total body workouts. Since you aren't worried about size or bulking, this would be a great way for you to have high intensity workouts, while still getting some of the functional strength. A 3 day split would involve using your major muscle groups every time you work out. It would focus mostly on compound movements(bench press, pull-ups, squat, etc.) and very little on isolation(tricep pulldowns, curls, shrugs, kickbacks, etc. )

LINK

This link has a very common, and very simple split. It is almost all compound movements, while switching up the intensity, and volume.

I would also suggest starting to add in some HIIT cardio sessions. You will see the lbs and fat drop off of you, and the workouts, while brutal, are short and VERY effective.

Great job again, and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Naw, it was just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)

I could have pushed for another couple but I'm still not back to 10 miles

But I am trying to up my game by running on back to back days whenever possible

Don't overdo it! But seriously that is awesome.

My goal for the year is a sub-ten minute mile.

You'll hit that fast.

I set my sights at 9:30 for a while now I'm pissed at anything over 9 and really want to get to no mile slower than 8:30

I am at right above 12 now, which isn't great. I started at 18 though!

Really the Yoga teaching me how to breathe and properly stretch has allowed me to break through a wall I hit. I might make that a twice a week thing.
