I think it's ignorant, heinous, and really hurt our already bad reputation. I'e asked assholes to take down their flag in the grove for years, but time in a federal prison is ridiculous. I hope he sues the shite out of the state for cruel and unusual punishment and wins. We've got rapist and violent felons getting parole and he gets this?

Didn't read the article, did the kid graduate or kicked out of school?
Getting kicked out of school and having this on his record for the rest of his life among community service and a hefty fine would be enough without prison time IMO.

You're wrong. It did harm people. Who do you think he was trying to intimidate or make uncomfortable with a noose around a civil rights leader??? A noose obviously insinuates lynching and death to black folks. If you can't see how that is a bad thing, I don't know how to help you.
It was an act of terror, though not as extreme as we commonly associate with terror, but terror nonetheless.

It may have been for this kid. The Judge was obviously intent on sending a harsh message to others who would do something like this.

Yes, but it wasn't like he burned a cross on some individual black person's lawn. That would be a threat given the history of our country. This kid was drunk and did something stupid. No individual black person was threatened. Given that burning the American flag in front of veterans is considered speech protected by the First Amendment, this action would be too. Again, political correctness gone amok. Someone should talk to this kid; he doesn't deserve to go to prison for 6 months.

WTF is a threat of force? And 6 months for a misdemeanor? It was a stupid college kid doing a stupid thing. As much as I sympathize with Ole Miss being sensitive to their collective image, I can't agree with this.

Which is why he should be punished but within reason

What is the purpose of burning crosses? Why does/did the Klan do it? What was the goal? Was it effective?
Why do terrorists behead our citizens on camera and post it on the internet? What's their goal?

Maybe, but if I am the judge, I take that risk rather than slap him on the wrist and get the stigma.
