A federal judge sentenced Graeme Phillip Harris on Thursday to six months in prison beginning Jan. 4, and 12 months' supervised release. Harris' lawyer argued he didn't deserve jail time.
Harris pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge of using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students and employees. Prosecutors say he and two other former students placed a noose on the statue of James Meredith, a black man who integrated Ole Miss amid rioting in 1962.
A second man, Austin Reed Edenfield, had been scheduled to plead guilty Wednesday. That hearing was postponed. The third former student has not been charged.

I disagree. Ole Miss has to deal with living under a microscope when it comes to racial issues and you have out of state dumbasses that come in and don't care. They go do stuff like this and it makes us look bad.

And there are better ways they could have punished him without throwing him into an already incredibly over populated prison system

Really bad act, but speech. His actions were protected by the First Amendment, but he pleaded guilty? No explicit threat to anyone and he was drunk when he hung the noose on the statue.

I really doubt he knew he was going to spend 6 months in prison. If he did, he must have had the worst attorney ever

6 months in prison for putting a piece of rope on a statue is absolutely insane.
Being an a-hole should not be a crime.
This is basically just thought crime.
What he did was petty vandalism, give him a fine.
