He knows that but expecting a hardcore Kentucky fan to say anything nice about any potential UT basketball coach is a lot like expecting an Alabama fan to scream "Go Big Orange!" instead of "Roll Tide!"

Sounds like he was a really well-respected and recognized assistant with some good recruiting results.

For the record the displeasure with Cuonzo was at mid season with bad losses and no tourny on the horizon for the 3rd year in a row - the team had a really good turn around and the displeasure eased up greatly. He wasn't run off - he left. Supposedly his raise was okay but the buyout wasn't.

The turnaround he did at Tech is freaking amazing. He didn't do it with players either (Tech didn't have them). He did it with pure coaching, strategy, and conditioning.

Wooooah there......he had one of the premier point guards in the nation, a great three point shooter and his best player was injured at the start of conference play.

He also had a pretty good shot blocker as well.

These guys?

quote:

Hired in spring 2011 to resuscitate a long-struggling program coming off a 2-14 season in the WAC, White has not let a lack of prior experience as a head coach stop him from performing that task with stunning speed. He won 18 games his first season and 27 his second, all with players few Division I programs besides the Bulldogs had any interest in recruiting. Six-foot-3 junior Raheem Appleby, Louisiana Tech's lone double-digit scorer last season, weighed less than 140 pounds in high school and only received scholarship offers from the Bulldogs and a Division II college in his native Arkansas. Six-foot-9 junior Michale Kyser, the team's leading shot-blocker and rebounder, signed with White only after backing out of his letter of intent to Lamar when the school fired its coach. And Kenneth "Speedy" Smith, the WAC's assist leader last season, had zero Division I offers when White unexpectedly received a YouTube clip from the 6-foot-3 point guard late in his senior season.

Whether they were overlooked, coached up, developed or whatever you want to call it it's not like he walked into a roster full of 5*s. That's an impressive turnaround.

Solid hire? yes

Who did he recruit while he was at Ole Miss?

I can see White going to battle with LSU with Louisiana and Texas kids.

Not sure who he recruited on an individual basis while at OM, but I do know he helped bring in 3 top 25 classes as an assistant. One of them being ranked as high as #7 IIRC.

Love this guy's style of play and energy. Would be very happy with the hire

He would be a good hire for the conference and Tennessee.

Yes, recruiting will be the question, but he would had done more with the roster last year by using race horses as races horses instead of trying make them plow horses like Martin did.

So the issue for next year is if the roster will be as athletic.

I've said it countless times but we're surrounded by pools of talent in every direction - several major cities 4hrs or less away. If this guy has the same kind of high energy and willingness to sell the program that everyone says he has then he should be able to bring in good players without problem.

A lot of smoke on VQ that there was a hangup on buyout money and VOLS have moved on from White.
