No offense to Bowers but he's the #1 composite JUCO player on 247 yet averaged 12pts/9rebs??? Kind of hard to believe.

I thought the same thing but apparently the JC's in the panhandle are loaded. His team went 10 deep and at least 5 players on their roster will play in an AQ conference.

But he's the supposed #1 JUCO player, he should be the dominant guy on his own team and he's "just another player".

I cant imagine the #1 JUCO recruit being a 12/9 guy in JUCO, nobody on his team should be close to his ability.

Chipola is loaded.

Sam Cassell is going to UConn. Carlos Morris is going to Minnesota. Both of those guys were Top 150 players in high school. Torian Graham was a top 100 player.

Not all JUCO is created equally.

Im not saying it is, but he's the #1 ranked player, yet only averages 12/9, shot 47% which is good but has no 3 point shot at 6'7 and shot <50% from the line.

Don't see how he's the best player in JUCO with a line like that.

Maybe scouts think his game will transition well to college, I don't know.

Some LSU fans are expecting too much out of Josh Gray.

Eh, I don't think so. What do you think he'll do?

Expecting 12 ppg (my expectation with ~25 m/gm) doesn't seem like a strecth considering his improvement (and he averaged 9.3 as a freshman at Texas Tech).

That was on a really bad Texas Tech team, though. His percentages weren't good at all.

He's pretty much a known quantity at this point. An extremely quick combo guard with baggage and without a jump shot. I think he's a good pickup for LSU, but he is being over-hyped imo. He's not even close to being a McDonald's All-American talent.

Gray was just a freshman at the time and did make the All-Big XII Freshman team. He improved dramatically too this last season in JUCO. Any guy who can take over a game is a damn good player. He had 8 games of 40+ points this season, 3 of those were for 59+. Shot 45% on the season which is very good for a short guard (6'1). By comparison, Wilbekin shot sub 40% on his season.

By the way, a short guard who averages well over 30 points a game definitely HAS a jump shot.

And? He was the man who took all the shots and the entire offense ran through him. He was keyed on in every game still shot a decent % and averaged over 30. I do think he's a volume player who will need to take a lot of shots to do well (a Henderson who drives to the basket and has a better FG%).

I don't think he's a McD AA talent (but he'll be a lot better than some have performed in college), but I think he's at least a 4* caliber player.

He's shooting 30% from three in JUCO. Alright, he has a jump shot... It's just not a very good one at this point.

JUCO stats are fools' gold anyways. Gray has played a full season of high-major basketball already. I'm more inclined to draw conclusions from those than from his JUCO stats.

I think he's going to be a good player for LSU. I'm just not sure he's worthy of the hype he's getting.

Marshall Henderson shot 44% from the field as a sophomore in JUCO.

He only averaged 19.6 points, but he also was on a loaded team that went undefeated and won the NJCAA national title.

He was shooting much higher than 30% from 3 for the first 2/3's of the season in JUCO. He's a streaky guy. 7 of the last 8 games were very rough on him % wise, his team was completely relying on him in close games and he was being swarmed defensively.

And a jump shot and 3 point shot are two very different things. Regardless, a short guard who averages over 33 points a game OBVIOUSLY has a jump shot otherwise there's no chance he'd average close to that only being able to drive to the hoop.

This is dumb, players tend to improve over time. So why would go by how a player looks as a freshman over how he looks as a sophomore going into their junior season? Wilbekin was pretty bad a freshman, not so much after that.

Stringer and Hickey were bad as freshmen, much better over time. JOB III was bad as a freshman, much better over time.

Not sure what you're getting at. LSU fans who know anything about him aren't expecting some dominant player who will average 25 a game and shoot 50%....just a streaky scorer who can distribute and take over games at times. I bet he'll be a bit like Marcus Thornton with less focus on the 3 point shot.

Of course, he could have significantly improved. It's possible. But it's also possible that he's dominating poor JUCO competition and that his percentages will drop against D-1 competition.

Not as a junior. He was dominant his senior year though. They also play two different positions.

Mizzou just picked up a JUCO guard, Kevin Punter. Know nothing about the kid and he went to JUCO here in Missouri. Originally from New York. Best I can tell we beat out Missouri State and University of Texas

San Antonio.

Seriously though, sounds like his recruiting was picking up a bit as teams fill those final holes. Apparently was talking to Baylor, Oklahoma and Wichita State among others.

He DID significantly improve. You dont lead the entire country in scoring and not OBVIOUSLY be improved.

Thornton was a streaky scorer (Who we leaned on quite some bit). We wont have to lean on Gray nearly as much, but Gray has the scoring ability Thornton has (just in a different way). You dont throw down 40+ 1/3 of a season and at times 50 and 60 and not be a pretty damn good player. Keep in mind not a single person was even close to Gray's numbers last season in JUCO.

Which isnt close to 25 a game and 50% shooting (Thornton shot 43.6%). Not sure what you're failing to grasp here.
