It always amazed me when Nutt was here that we couldn't find one guy to field punts consistently. BP shored that up from year one, hopefully we're not going back to the Nutt days of horrendous special teams b/c it cost us numerous times during the Nutt years w/ the Fish fumble being the obvious #1

It never ceased to amaze me that during the Nutt years, we had a fricking fullback (Hillis) returning punts. I remember fricking Jerell Norton returning punts at one point and dropping like two in a game and still not getting benched.

Nutt's biggest folly on STs was not having scholarship kickers, he was able to get good kickers (Dan Bailey for example) but he and Saban refuse to give a scholarship to a guy who can win or lose you a game for some reason.

I never understood this mentality. I get a bumbling idiot like Nutt not realizing the importance of a scholarship kicker, but I'll never understand why a guy like Saban wouldn't have one.

Saban inherited his only good kicker (Tiffin) from Shula, had his own kicker cost him one National Title (last year) and nearly cost him another (2011).

You can't really put that on the kicker. Saban knew it was a long shot but wanted the chance and failed to put any coverage guys on the FG attempt. That loss is purely on Saban.

eta: Unless he missed other FG's in that game that Im pretty sure he did and those are what you are talking about.

Wat? You can single handedly blame that game on the kickers. Foster missed 2 FG earlier and an extra point in the game and that Freshman missed the kick six FG.

See the edit.

The kick six isn't on the kicker tho. At that range a miss is damn near expected, and the reason it turned into a kick six is on Saban or who ever put in a pure blocking package with no coverage guys.

Agreed. But shanking a 30 and 40 yarder is totally on the kicker

Last time we beat Bama was because of a shitty kicking performance and because they didn't have Saban.

My buddys mom had shirts made for a party before his wedding and she spelled Dickson Dixon on it. I couldn't wear it, just didn't feel right.

Coincidentally my mom is from Dixon, IL which is only a few miles from Berts hometown.

All of the practices this week are closed so there won't be a ton of information but here is what 247 put out so far tonigt.

***Hunter Henry said Jeremy Sprinkle and AJ Derby has helped him and the offense with their play

***Hunter also was joking about not wanting to be a QB because the green jerseys they wear they are soft. He was joking

***Austin said the fact he is getting more reps now help him a lot. He said everything is bigger and faster here

***Chaney said some of the scrimmage was good and some not so good.

- Kody Walker said he’s lost a little weight since last season. He likes being at fullback since they get to do a lot of different things. He said the transition from running back has not been too difficult in this offense, and that he feels as if he’s made a ton of progress since his two injuries during the early goings of last season.

- When asked whether his move to tight end is “a two-week thing,” AJ Derby smiled and said whatever Bielema says will go.

- Grady Ollison said he didn’t have much of a reaction on his move from tackle to guard. He said you have to have the mentality of being a dog at guard and that it’s a very physical position.

- Coach Lunney said he’s excited about all of his guys and likes all of them, but AJ has been a welcome addition to the group.

- Lunney joked that back when he played quarter back, his coaches tried to move him to linebacker several times but that he effectively fought it off during his career even though it might have been more of his natural position.

- Dan Skipper said that he prefers tackle because it gives him more space to use his body, but that ultimately he’s just trying to get on the field. One of the offensive line’s mantras is play fast, play hard, play smart.

It's a pretty terrible feeling for me to know that the last time we beat Alabama I was a 21 year old college senior. I'm now 29 and have a wife, a kid, a mortgage and a career, and have already moved cities once.

I used to bring this up during Hogville's annual "Alabama is overrated this year" thread.

I'm really starting to like Derby. Dude was a backup QB who saw a good deal of game action last year and seems to be taking a pretty big position move totally in stride.

You see far too many quarterbacks nowadays with the Tebow mentality of "QB or nothing"

We have some special visitors that might take some reps with us from the line of scrimmage. It will be fun for everyone involved. I’ve talked to some people involved and this is one of the few times a year where we can involve some interaction without penalty and we will take advantage of it.

Giving Stoerner another chance to run the Stoernover play correctly?

Scantron to Adams?

Grovey running the option with Foster?

Oh the possibilities
