Still no excuse.
We don't say "truckers die on the job a lot so it's ok if they kill another motorist to save their own lives." We, in fact, expect more professional level of driving and response to hazards than an "amateur" driver. But the police can kill with virtual impunity.

This is, oddly enough, part of the problem. There is a perception among the public and LEOs that your job is more dangerous than it actually is.
Eta: And that leads to things like shooting a schizophrenic 19 year old armed with a screwdriver and a kid with a Wii controller. Because the first thing in the LEOs mind is those videos.

I don't remember saying it was ok for anyone to die. But trying to compare trucker fatalities with police officer fatalities is comparing apples and oranges.

I don't buy this. I've seen people get their heads cracked on the pavement because they didn't comply fast enough. Their offense? Questioning a traffic stop.
I've also had cops come in my cabin at 2 in the morning on the false premise of a 911 call (we had no land line in the cabin) and it took everything I had to keep them from killing my german shepherd.
There is a perception problem with LE, and it's warranted. I've got friends who are state troopers, and some of them agree with me. The industry itself it it's worst enemy.
Most of that comes from being proactive.

No more dangerous than a construction worker working on the side of the hiway but they can't shoot people trying to hit them with 4000 lb bullets. In fact they are charged with assualt for defending themselves by throwing things at the car.

I don't think so. I was comparing the functions of their jobs and their relationship to the community and the community's safety.

I did say normally, not always. I will agree that there are some officers that are on a power trip, and like using excessive force when it's not necessary.

Just making a point and you damn well know it. I am intentionally tempering my replies in this thread for a reason and I would think you have picked up on that. You know as well as I do that things like Ruby Ridge and Waco happen on a smaller scale every fricking day. I don't blame you for blindly defending your own but you have to know that you are full of shite.

Our electric bill shot up since we were out of fuel oil for two weeks, so they thought we had a grow operation.
My problem isn't with individual officers, it's the whole CJ system. I think we'd do both the public and LEO a favor by changing our laws to be more people friendly.
100% of our citizens break the law. Maybe our problem isn't with the public, it's with our laws. Let's get back to removing violent offenders from the streets and being less proactive about the small stuff.

Ending the war on drugs and stop the harassment of people with a tailight out (we know they stop you to find something larger) and it would be safer for everyone, including officers of the law.
