I know you said football, but no worst SEC coach thread would be complete without a mention of Wade Houston.

I really didn't like Nutt and I don't think he was a good coach, but he is FAR from the worst coach in the SEC since 1980. Jack Crowe was a lot worse for us even.LINK
The man that made Colonel Reb cry has to be the worst.
Hallman was horrible at LSU, but really seemed to be a good coach at Southern Miss. I do bet he is the only person to ever be fired from a high school coaching job after having been an SEC football head coach.

I knew we were screwed when we hired Croom who hadn't been in the college game for 18 years. I was glad when he left. I just can't put him as the worst since 1980. Others mentioned Hallman, DiNardo, Dubose, Orgeron and I would even throw Danny Ford (maybe not so much a bad coach but a horrible coach when you look at the whole package) in there. Croom may be next after Ford (or maybe Ford was just one of my least favorites after backstabbing Kines).

which was really for Ellis Johnson as DC. Crooms headed up the worst offense in modern football history. We scored 6 defensive TD's plus had a couple of punt returns and KO returns for TD's, and still only averaged 20 points per game for the season.
30 offensive TD's in 13 ballgames. To put that in perspective- some of you were downing Mullen's offense this past season- and they scored 45.
He may have gotten COY- but that was a joke when you head up the 113th ranked offense out of 119 teams

Dinardo does not belong on the list. He took LSU out of the cellar after 6 straight losing seasons and to three straight bowl games. Lou Tepper was his undoing later. But Dinardo did some good things.

Hallman TWICE won the toss and elected to kick off – kicking off to both start the game and the second half! Hallman forgot to submit the paperwork for Loup or Daigle (I forgot which) to travel on with the team. So the SEC Player of the Week stayed in Baton Rouge. The Auburn meltdown… But he could whistle with two fingers in his mouth to get players attention!

Curley has to go..we would be better off with Moe. When you ride the coat tails of a legend in the Godfather of College football and hit the lottery with Brett Favre, then you know you are living life with many blessings. Then when it is you and you win 16 games in 4 seasons and eventually get fired from a major college program, it becomes sad. When you then get fired from an Alabama High School team, you are just basically a failure. From the Bear, to coaching pee wee league..that's the way to go in life. At least he was banging a nice chick. Seemed like a great guy... but easily the worst of the SEC since 1980.

Choctaw has just let his irrational hatred of Nutt cloud his judgment in so many ways. Nutt isn't OUR worst SEC coach let alone the worst in the SEC since 1980. Crowe is the worst coach to coach in the SEC since well, maybe ever. The guy was AWFUL.

This is an easy question to answer it is quite plain and simply coach O...sure nutt sucked but even he couldn't be as bad as coach O. Coach O was like miles without luck, grass and a hat.

Had a quick discussion with another SEC fan (Arky) in my office and he was bitching about Houston Nutt.
We've had worse than Houston Nutt. Jack Crowe comes to mind. He was just with us way too long.

Woody at Vandy was just an awful hire

Yep, think how different things would have been had Frank retired in 2003 and Nutt had moved into his office, and I clearly remember that being discussed.

Either Hallman, Orgeron, or Ray Goff. They are probably the three biggest failures in terms of success relative to the talent they had to work with.

thank you. this contest is really between Hallman and Orgeron imo.
I think these are your top two with Orgeron way ahead. He seemed more like a character than a coach with his antics, his Hummer commercial, etc.
Every time I hear a fan complain about their head coach, I remind them that at least he isn't Ed Orgeron.

Yeah, no telling what kind of AD Nutt would have made , or who we would have hired as coach, but for sure Nutt's coaching tenure wouldn't have been seen as bad as it is now.
Jack Crow was 12-21-1 at Arkansas. 3-7-1 in conference play. Just HORRIBLE.
