Is Kirby Smart already considered the greatest Georgia football coach ever?

Is it too early, or are his championships and consistency already enough?

He's the most successful ex-Alabama coordinator ever.

It is my opinion that he is.

I think he will be and, in hindsight, we will all agree that he already reached that point with 2 back to back natties.
Not sure he's done enough to eclipse the nostalgia of the Dooley Era yet though imo as 1980-83 was alllllmmmooosttt as good as the current run, also Dooley has a lot more SEC championships than Kirby so far

without question.
This is somewhat unpopular but when Richt left in 2015 I was of the opinion that he was our best ever. People will jsut point to dooley by default but I don't know if I'd agree. That's another topic entirely though.
What Kirby has already done in such a short amount of time...I don't see any way to claim that the answer would be someone else.

he also coached for 25 years
This era of football is 10x harder than it was back in those days and kirby has already won more natties and has a much, much higher win percentage, against much tougher opponents. Kirby also doesn't have any true stinkers which vince had plenty of

I’d say “yes”. As much as I love Dooley, he benefited greatly from Herschel Walker. Without HW, Dooley would be remembered as a great coach but not a UGA legend.
Smart has had continued success with several teams that looked nothing like each other, and with both super stars and no-name players alike contributing towards championships. He has elevated the brand of UGA football and has built a culture of excellence that carries over from season to season and recruiting class to recruiting class.
I don’t see how Smart hasn’t already cemented himself as the UGA GOAT.

I think its clear that he is, which kind of speaks to Georgia's program historically that you got a guy who has two stellar years in a row and its already enough to call him the GOAT for their program. Like if the next Bama, Michigan, or Oklahoma coach did that they wouldn't instantly be the GOAT at any of those places. Even at Tennessee this run isn't enough to topple Neyland just yet.
But on the other hand, most programs haven't ever won 2 in a row (or even 1 ever in many cases).

He is, but it drops off quite a bit from him to the next.

This is a big one for me. Now first I want to stress that that DID happen...we can't just erase it or pretend it didn't happen. We DID land Herschel, we DID win like crazy from 80-82, etc. So yeah dooley gets credit for it. BUT, for the sake of this hypothetical, if you remove those 3 seasons when we had the greatest CFB player of all time, Dooley has a 22 year career here with 0 natties and 3 SEC titles.

This is one of the most incredible things to me when talking about our current run. Yes, we've had big time stud 1st rounders on defense, mainly in the front 7. But we are essentially a bunch of no-names on offnese. Stetson bennett, zamir white, kenny mcintosh, ladd mconkey, marcus rosemy, etc. Most average CFB fans outside the southeast have probably never even heard of these guys.

LMAO. If you had a coach that had done the same thing he's done in 8 years, you'd be asking the same damn question. The only SEC coaches that Kirby wouldn't at least have an argument against are the two Bama coaches.

Neyland > Kirby right now and its not particularly close

In only 7 years as a head coach, Kirby already has the same amount of *legitimate* national titles as Neyland and Fulmer combined. Ouch.

As has been discussed numerous times on here, both of Kirbys titles have asterisks

quote:it isn’t just the two natty’s, though. He won a SEC championship and brought UGA to its first national championship game (and was an overtime play away from winning it) for the first time since the mid-80’s. He has also tied or broken several UGA and SEC records along the way in less than 10 years.

Much more could be said about his resume, but Smart has accomplished a lot in a little bit of time.

I'm not saying Smart isn't great, because he is. I'm saying your program as a whole isn't great historically.

What’s the asterisk for a 15-0 season?
2021 was marred by the loss, but honestly Fulmer was lucky he only had to beat Sherill’s MSU Bulldogs in the SECCG and not Saban’s Alabama (and Miss State gave Tennessee quite a fight).

Kirby is the greatest already. Erk Russell was the second greatest.
