So far, no one in the SEC is concerned about the passing game in a Gus Malzahn offense from what I can tell. Until we have a QB that can throw accurately from the pocket, whether he can run or not, we will get pretty much the same results. SEC defenses are too will coached and talented. What an insight, I'm a fricking genius

A 6' quarterback, especially one who weighs in at 241 lbs, or QB's that are off target on a fairly regular basis does not fill me with optimism. To pin my hopes on a 6'-4" QB with a powerful arm and after all this time, still cannot read a defense, gives me a queasy feeling for the upcoming season. I don't think I'm being irrational or jumping off a cliff but you have to admit, as our opponents look at the performance of our quarterbacks I doubt they are wringing their hands with anxiety. Add to it play calling, WR performance..... hell, shaky performance of the offense as a whole(missed blocks, dropped balls, poor execution), a quarterback who could complete accurate passes from the pocket could really stabilize this offense and increase your confidence.... I think.

As a neophyte I reserve the right to be wrong and have my mind changed

Grooming QB's isn't as easy as everyone one on here acts like it is...There is a reason LSU has struggled and UGA has underperformed. If you have a decent QB you got a shot ala MSU and Ole Miss the last couple of seasons, but without them you'll be looking at 6-6 and 7-5 type seasons if you over all talent is like Auburn and LSU. I wasn't impressed with what I saw at the A-day game, but it was obvious we didn't give JFIII much chance which the posi-barner in me hopes means we were hiding him.

No one is saying that it is easy but they are saying that if you are getting paid 4 million a year to do it, you damn sure better be pretty good at it. This is job competency 101, if you aren't good at your job you won't do it long.

I still look at the offense and think that our biggest issue is laziness and complacency. 2013 was a great year for the offense, we literally ran on anyone we wanted and had a damn good line, fantastic bruiser fullback and damn good running qb and rb.

The biggest thing to me that stood out was the pre snap movements and misdirection before the play even started. Last year, we seemed to have none of it when we should be using it more. We used to snap the ball quickly and we have gone away from that. I think White could be a really good quarterback and leader for the offense if we added pre snap movement back to the offense and a little speed to snap the ball. malzahn's offense isn't built to line up and take you head to head. Our line isn't built for that and isn't taught to do that, the line is built on pulls and reads to stay away from trouble players. We don't seem to be doing that anymore either.

If Malzahn can get back to that in his offense, I think he can assemble a good offense again and get kept around. I am on board to let him coach out his contract either way and hope that he figures out some shite before the end that gives hope of the future. But if Malzahn goes, Jacobs doesn't need to make the next hire since he is supposed to be leaving soon also anyway.

If you are hired exclusively due to your prowess as an offensive coach, you should be able to have options at QB

You mean the same Georgia team who has won 10 games in 4/5 seasons with their "down" year at 8 wins? Or do you mean LSU whohas basically done the same thing?

The difference is that their poor QB play keeps them from winning a SECCG with a floor of 8 wins. This year we should have a legit defense and may not even win 7 games

About the quarterbacks:

Junior college transfer John Franklin III, sophomore Sean White and senior Jeremy Johnson competed throughout the spring. Nothing was settled.

Were the coaches disappointed in the performances of the quarterbacks in the spring?

“I wouldn’t say that. Were they overwhelmed? I wouldn’t say that either. I think John was about what you would expect overall. If anything, it was surprising how well and how fast he picked up the offense. He’s a really smart kid. He had some ball security issues early on, but those got better. Sean can spin it. There’s no question about that, and Jeremy really was a good bit better.

"John's speed and athleticism are just at different a level. Can he throw it well enough to win against the top teams in the SEC? He can if he keeps improving."

What about Woody Barrett?

“He’ll get a look, and he has great talent. He has a lot of developing to do to be an SEC quarterback, more than he can do in a month of practice. At least, that’s what you would think.”

There has been a lot of talk about looking for a graduate transfer

“Yeah, I know. A lot of people seem to think that is a sign of desperation. I don’t believe that’s true. There’s a number of guys out there. I think there has been interest in looking around and seeing if there is one available that would challenge the others. I wouldn’t rule it out, depending on who is available. Some guys probably wouldn’t come unless they were guaranteed to be the starter. I don’t believe there is anybody out there they would make that guarantee to.”

Tell me about this offensive line. Is it good, bad, average?

“I’d say it was average at the end of the spring because of the uncertainty at tackle. Alex looks a lot like he did in 2013. Braden gets better every day. Xavier was pushing Austin before the move. He’s a whole lot better player than people might know."

What about the tackles?

“It’s just hard to say. Austin played some tackle at Ole Miss, but he’s been concentrating on center for a while now, even the year he sat out. Robert is the kind of man you want on your team. He’s tough. He’s dedicated. He’s physical. He also has some limitations. Darius is such a talented guy, high draft kind of talent. Sometimes you see it on the field. Sometimes you don’t."

So, what should we expect?

“Really, it depends on the tackles. I think we’ll be solid. If two guys really step up at tackle, we could be a lot more than solid. I think the middle three - whether it’s Xavier at center or Austin moves back – has a chance to be really good. I’ll tell you something else: Mike Horton isn’t far from making it hard to leave him out of the lineup. I just think they view him as a guard more than a tackle, and there’s no room at guard right now.”

Sophomore running back Kerryon Johnson had to watch most of spring practice from the sideline after undergoing shoulder surgery, but he is expected to be full-speed for preseason camp. And that’s a big deal.

“He’s electric with the ball in his hands whether it’s we faked a punt in the bowl game, he scored touchdowns in the Kentucky game and Georgia game,” running backs coach Tim Horton says. “He made plays for us all year last year. He’s a guy that is going to be on the field and we are going to get the ball to him, whether it’s kickoff returns, whether it’s throwing bubble routes to him or handing it to him. He’s a guy we need to get the ball in his hands double digits every game.”

And who collectively own an 8-4 edge over AU teams with Malzahn running the offense.

And will likely lose to both UGa and LSU again, no matter how terrible their QBs are.

It sounds like to me that Sean White is the clear starter. JF3 will do the wildcat role. Every account I read is hoping JF3s passing greatly improves in the next 3 or 4 months and that isn't likely to happen

White would be the starter w/o question, IF he could get off the party train. TIFWIW.

That basically confirms my thinking. People were melting about the OL this spring, but we'll be fine there.

I wish they would have talked about the WRs. This whole season is contingent on the passing game. I think a combo of Sean White and JFIII will be adequate at QB, but we NEED some WRs to step up. The rest of the team is talented enough to contend for the West IMO, but it's all for naught if the offense can't get off the ground again.

Can't make any real predictions until we know about QB for sure, but my gut is telling me this is a 10 win season.

But DAMNIT!! We have a football team to run! Can't he put it up for a few years?

How does smoking weed = being on a party train. I had a grad teacher roommate that smoked pot whenever he studied or graded papers.

Depends on what you are comparing it to. The old man in me says, "Because it is illegal and against the law". Pretty much

And because he is in the fight for the starting job for a major College football teams and it would, and should, cost him his chance if he gets caught.

All this is based on if its true. Which who knows.

But hey, Im just a old man typing on a keyboard. The entire program is not counting on me

What would I have to gain from making tish up? Nada is what.

Lanier is right, I am a bit older than most here. BUT, when your lifelong dream is right there for you, and you can't see fit to cease and desist, it IS a problem in my book.
