Jason Smith arrived to Auburn as a quarterback, moved to receiver, discovered success and then dropped to the back of the rotation.

The senior made an immediate impact after switching to receiver in 2015. He caught 13 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, ran the football six times and even attempted a couple passes.

Then, last season happened. He caught only four passes for 60 yards and was hardly on the field.

"It is what it is. It's whatever,” Smith said. “I’m just looking forward to this year, staying prayed up, letting God handle everything. Whatever he's got planned for me.”

Whether Smith’s role grow as a senior remains to be seen. Ultimately, how much he plays is up to him.

“He’s just got to be consistent in everything he does,” receivers coach Kodi Burns said. “I’m fair with all of my guys. Just consistency is the main thing. I tell those guys ‘You’ve got to clock in and clock out every single day. In the meeting room, on the field, it’s about clocking in, putting in the work and then you clock out and you do what you do.’ It’s just all about consistency. He’s done a great job, especially early on in the spring, coming out and making plays. Kind of being one of those leaders. You know, we don’t have a bunch of older guys right now at receiver and he’s really the vet of the group.”

Smith believes success starts in the mind as he continues to work at slot receiver.

"That's a mind thing, too,” Smith said. “When you're not getting as many touches as you want, you're not scoring the ball or even getting to play, it's a mind thing. You've just got to stay focused and have faith."
