I was never on the fire Gus train. To me Clemson was explained simply by not recognizing his D's level or potential level. It was obvious he thought we needed 35 or more and couldn't imagine our O getting it against that D.

The oline hampered play calling against a decent dline until the change was made.

My only issues with Gus as coach revolve around JW 2014 and DW 2015. Based on what we know both should have been kicked off the team. One player outside of DE, LT or QB isn't more important than team disciple and respect for coaches. He fixed that this year with JR.

A smaller complaint which goes back to his coordinator days is he is slow to play younger talent over older experience. For my money I'd rather have the best player on the field no matter their experience level.

Giving up playing calling is getting a lot of run, and maybe it's impossible to be a HC and call plays in the modern era. However, RL is benefiting from the same simple thing Gus made his name on...an oline that finds 3 yards for any RB you trot out there. Once you have those 3 yards in your pocket and a DC knows it the creative play calling is a 1000 times easier.
