It's hard to believe at the beginning of the year we wanted Gus out of the house and on the curb, and we are now in consideration for the SEC West.

Not everyone wanted Gus gone.

A lot of that was based on the media's narrative of Gus being on the hot seat and claiming that "as long as Saban is at Bama, AU fans will always judge Auburn's success against Bama."

My personal opinion on the matter is I don't care how Alabama is doing. That's not how I judge our success. It's silly. There are only a handful of proven head coaches in this country who have achieved Saban's level of success and none of them are leaving their current schools (Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh).

I want to see AU continue to recruit well, run a clean program and be consistent like the '82-'89 Dye years. That includes stringing together back-to-back 10 win seasons and playing for the SECC once every three, four or five years. We should be competitive in every game and challenge our main rivals - Bama, UGA, and LSU, never losing to all three in a season unless it's a rebuilding year.

Worst case scenario we should finish this regular season 8-4. If that's the case, then I expect at least 9 win-regular season next year based on the talent we return. I want to see an upwards trajectory until we go through a "down year." Those down years, our floor should be 8 regular season wis.

That was really a big part of it. That was one of the main reasons we wanted Gus out because we wanted to compete with the success of Alabama.

Much of the angst early this year with Clemson and Texas A&m and last year had to do with idiotic play calling.

Many fans could tell that we had the player talent to play better. We had a raucous crowd against Clemson and Texas A&M. It had nothing to do with Saban for me. Getting beat by a better team is one thing. But repeatedly shooting ourselves in the foot like we did early this year was insanity. Very glad Gus finally came around and stepped back from the play calling.

Lets be honest how much better has the O been since Gus quit calling plays? So Gus did kind of get out of the way.

Funny how everyone is hanging their hats on Gus not calling plays right now. Different guy, calling the plays Gus tells him to.

We just got better because we did not call stupid plays, the o Line is blocking and we are just playing better overall.

Rhett has not done anything different othe than not using the QB carousel.

We got better all over the field.

I don't think Gus all of a sudden forgot how to call plays. He is a very good OC and offensive mind. The problem is that the assistants are the ones spending the time in meeting rooms with the players breaking down film and installing the gameplans. Then Gus is trying to come in as a HC, with much less time with the players/film, and call the plays. That means a big disconnect to me. Eventually all these OCs/DCs realize that it's not feasible to spend the time you need to be able to call plays, and also be the HC with all those responsibilities. Saban is a huge control freak, but he damn sure doesnt call his own defenses. Gus just needs to be the HC and maybe pitch in on gameplanning where possible.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys are watching the same games I am.

If you can't tell the difference in personnel/formations we've been using to go along with different play calling... I'm not sure what to say to that.

First you must be an alter.

Second, you always have some folks who want to get rid of the coach. If we lose this Saturday, the vocal 5% will be heard. Happened at UGA, LSU, and really anywhere.

Yea, because I have never seen any of those plays or the formations we saw Saturday. That jet sweep play and run up the middle is new shite.

I think you are missing the point. Same plays , different guy. Rhett is more in tune than Gus but it's the same plays. With the same formations. It's working better now because we are not doing things to throw us out of rythm and we have gotten better.

We went from 4/5 wide sets the first three weeks to TE/FB formations almost exclusively (unless 3rd and 6+)... to simplify it into no more QB carousel when White took almost all the snaps vs ark state and a&m (until the games were decided) is just flat wrong.
