If it were possible at all, it would probably take upwards of 6mil a year.

My only guess is that the OP was born many years after Barfield was our HC.

Yeah, Gustav is being inexplicably stubborn, but the talent differential at AU between now and the late 70s is nigh on incomprehensible. Someone with Wade Christopher's physical attributes would be a two-year starter for Barfield.

I'm guessing Willie wasn't alive to hear Howard Cosell on MNF, after seeing Andrews, Brooks and Cribbs running roughshod over NFL defenses, ask "how did Auburn ever lose a game while these guys were in school?"

Every AU fan alive at the time would have provided a two word response: Doug. Barfield.

Indeed. In the Age of the Primacy of the Running Back, we had all those studs and could barely be average.

Average pts per game (1976-80)

1976 - 17.6
1977 - 18.5
1978 - 21.6
1979 - 30.0 (This was the year Cribbs was a senior and Brooks was a junior)
1980 - 21.3

All that talent and "development" (lol) and only one decent year on offense out of five. And some of those points came from the defense too, cuz I know Fast Freddie Smith picked off at least a couple of passes and took'em to the house.

I think we would all agree that college football was different in the 1970s compared to today because teams were not paying the Florida Atlantic Owls or the Western Carolina Catamounts $1 million to come play a glorified scrimmage.

And as far as out-of-conference resume against major conferences, it looks to me like Gus' signature win is Kansas State in 2014.

Wisconsin LOSS
Florida State LOSS
Clemson LOSS
Louisville WIN
K State WIN
Washington State WIN

Gus is his own worst enemy. When he gets out of his own way and doesn't insist on being cute and gimmicky as an offensive philosophy, he runs a brilliant offense. For whatever reason though, he currently can't see the forrest for the trees. His offense has regressed from innovative to running the wing t. At the rate he's going, he'll have us running the Notre Dame box before the end of the season. It sounds cliche, but until he gets back to football basics of one quarterback running the show and building an offense around his strengths, we will remain disjointed offensively. I know he said Sean is the guy yesterday, but Gus has burned up a lot of capital, and I refuse to believe it until I see it. I've seen him kill too drives with JJ, going all the way back to the Nick Marshall era. He can't help himself.

Sports Illustrated had an interview with Barfield shortlry after he became the coach. He was asked how did it feel to follow a legend. He replied it was probably better to follow the coach who followed the legend.

You mean Gus doesn't get more than one game in 2016?

What exactly do you propose after one game played?

Who are you suggesting we bring in today to take over for Gus?

How do you figure?

Didn't we have a losing record in conference last year that included some straight up coaching dumbassery not using Jovon Robinson, red zone play calls, twirly birds ad nauseum, etc.

Remember the play calls in overtime against Wisconsin. Remember Gus not going for 2 to beat Arkansas in overtime last year (rule #1 when playing on the road = when opponent gives you chance to win, take it.)

Then let's move to player development. Kiehl Frazier? Jeremy Johnson? Roc Thomas? Tony Stevens? How many 4 and 5 star athletes can we continue to see minimal output from?

And now let's talk defense. Does Gus have any idea or involvement in the defense at all? I've never seen a head coach that completely detached from 1/2 of his team. In fact, I'm not even sure Gus has any input on the O-line. Doesn't seem like it.

I'll sit down now.

Where's my bottle of jack?

With exception of the team in turdtown, the SEC was pretty dreadful in the 70's. AU 72, UGA 76, UT 70, LSU had a couple 9-winners in the early going, but that's about it.

Malzahn now 14 - 12 all-time in SEC.

He's got to go 5 - 2 in conference the rest of the way this year to have a better 4 year record than Barfield.

Not a good night but at least Gus won 5 SEC games this year thereby having a better winning % (just barely) in the SEC for 4 years.

SEC is a different league now, esp playing in the west. Comparison doesn't hold water.
