In Barfield's first four years as head coach, he went 13-10-1 in the SEC for 0.565 in-conference winning percentage.

Currently, Gus has a 14-11 record in the SEC his first three years for 0.560 in-conference winning percentage. In order to have a higher in-conference winning percentage for four years compared to Barfield, Gus must lead Auburn to at least 5-3 in the SEC this year.

Let that sink in.

You a big Barfield fan?

He did go on to a semi-successful career at Opelika High School. That counts for something.

My point is that the Auburn community did not accept getting punked around in the 1970s and there's no reason we should now either.

And by the way, Barfield wasn't playing out-of-conference joke games against Arkansas St., Louisiana Monroe or Alabama A&m.

Auburn played Fla St, Georgia Tech, Miami, etc repeatedly. The worst team they played was Southern Miss or Wake Forest.

i was a young man during the barfield years and "Yes" it does kind of remind me of them, although it still has a way to go to get quite as low...barfield actually did have some decent offenses, though....defense was the problem....who i would hire would be art briles....it all boils down to perception: do you want to be considered a politically incorrect rube, or continue to be a laughingstock

Is this board going to get obsessed with Briles like we did with Petrino? Because that is and was silly.

At least in the Barfield era we could develop offensive players. Defense absolutely sucked though.

If we had hired Petrino in the first place, we wouldn't be wallowing in mediocrity like we are now. He turned Louisville into a big name football program, took Arkansas to a BCS bowl game, and is getting Louisville back into the national conversation again now. He's a winner, regardless of what you think of him as a human being, and he definitely doesn't need on the job training like our current coach.

A couple of thoughts-

First, Fla St and Miami didn't grow into the program they are now until the 80's. They were closer to Arkansas St than the powerhouse programs they are/were now.

Second, I was on the hire Petrino bus, but I'm not on the hire Briles bus. Petrino loving women is not the same as turning a blind eye to rape. Sorry.

Here's the overall record of the SEC teams AU beat from 1976-79:

1976
Tennessee 6-5
Ole Miss 5-6

1977
Tennessee 4-7
Ole Miss 5-6
Florida 6-4-1
UGa 5-6

1978
Tennessee 5-5-1
Vandy 2-9
Miss State 6-5

1979
Vandy 1-10
Florida 0-10-1
Miss State 3-8
UGa 6-5

In other words, Barfield was incapable of beating any SEC team that finished with more than 6 wins overall. The closest he came was in 1978, when AU tied UGa, who finished the year 9-2-1.

The TAMU team AU beat last year was better than any SEC team AU ever defeated in the Barfield era.

Let THAT sink in.

Not a Barfield fan at all.

Just laughing at all you bitches after one game vs the #2 team in the country.

Yes, I hated the QB rotation and felt it was bush league, but even Barfield was given 5 years.

I don't remember Barfield winning any SEC titles or taking a team to the NC, do you?

I have and will agree Gus needs a real QB coach and OC. Will he ever do that? I don't think so and will eventually be his downfall I believe.

I'm not on a ledge freaking out like some of you so I guess I'm not understanding the panic threads like yours.

Smoke on Willie...

It's sad actually. Like there is any way Auburn hires a football coach that was actively covering up rape allegations against his football players. WTF?

You need to remind me which year Barfield took us to an SEC Championship and competed for a national championship, because I must have missed it.

Who the hell did Barfield "develop" on offense 1976-80? I hope you're not going to say Cribbs, Andrews, and Brooks. Saying Barfield "developed" Cribbs and Brooks is kinda like saying Dye "developed" Bo Jackson. And Barfield used Andrews as a damn fullback.

1976-80, Auburn had zero All-Americans on offense. Other than Cribbs and Brooks, the only All-SEC players that Auburn had on offense were OG Lynn Johnson (1977), OT Mike Burrow (1978), and OT George Stephenson (1979-80).
