Gonzalez was a NQ so that bumps it up at least one, right?

One reporter says yes but based on the new recruiting rules from a few months ago I don't know yet & I'm not sure it will be known til February & more concrete numbers come out.

Pretty sure NQ still count to your LOI limit

I thought the same but Rusty Mansell who follows this stuff closely said in this unique situation he doesn't think Carlito will count against AU. I'm not sure a player can count on the 25 list for 2 teams in the same year. He now counts for Memphis so he may not count for AU.

Well that's obviously a necessity but that's just to get back in the picture. Still would have a lot of work to do it appears.

Numbers Game: Where things stand with Auburn recruiting (247)
quote:

With Auburn landing commitment No. 12 Thursday night, here’s a look at where things stand numbers wise:

TOTAL COMMITS: 12 (Most recent: Matthew Hill, WR, Aug. 17)

SPOTS TO FILL: Approximately 12-13. With some recent transfers, Auburn is inching toward a full class of 25. There is no set number for the class at this time. It’s always fluid, right up until National Signing Day.

CLASS RANKING: No. 26 overall, No. 9 in the SEC. By comparison, Alabama is at No. 25 and Georgia is at No. 31. Auburn recruits against those two programs more than any others.

AVERAGE RATING PER COMMIT: 88.70 (90.00 is the 4-star threshold). Auburn’s total number of commits has some fans concerned, but the average rating per commit remains reasonably strong — it’s higher than No. 12 LSU and No. 13 UCLA, for example.

Now, here's a position-by-position overview ...

QUARTERBACK ...

COMMITS: 1 (Joey Gatewood -- pictured)

SPOTS TO FILL: 1

411: Auburn would like to add a second quarterback to the class. Justin Fields of Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison is the top target. Auburn, FSU and Georgia are the top contenders. Fields told us recently he won't announce his choice until sometime this season. Yet, there remain some who think an August commitment is possible. The Tigers would like him to wait so he can see the team's offense in action.

RUNNING BACK ...

COMMITS: 1 (Shaun Shivers, APB)

SPOTS TO FILL: 1

411: Four-star recruit Asa Martin (pictured) of Decatur (Ala.) Austin is Auburn's top target. He will announce Aug. 24 with Auburn and Alabama being the leading contenders. It could go either way, but the confidence level seems to be higher in Tuscaloosa right now.

WIDE RECEIVER ...

COMMITS: 2 (Shedrick Jackson and Matthew Hill)

SPOTS TO FILL: 1-2

411: Four-star recruits Justyn Ross of Phenix City (Ala.) Central, Seth Williams of Cottondale (Ala.) Bryant (pictured) and Anthony Schwartz of Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage are the three top targets. Auburn probably has the best shot right now with Williams.

TIGHT END ...

COMMITS: 0

SPOTS TO FILL: 0-1

411: It's not a given Auburn will take a tight end, but it does seem as though the Tigers would like to do so. Michael Parker of Huntsville (Ala.) Westminster Christian Academy (pictured) and 4-star recruit Luke Ford of Illinois are two the Tigers really like. Parker's brothers play for Alabama so if the Tide offers, look out. Ford is trending to Alabama. Baylor commit Ben Sims could be someone to watch. The Bears have three tight ends committed.

OFFENSIVE LINE ...

COMMITS: 2 (Jalil Irvin, C, Kameron Stutts, OG)

SPOTS TO FILL: 3

411: Auburn would like to add another guard and probably a tackle or two to the class. At guard, Trey Hill (pictured) of Houston County (Ga.) is the top target. He has visited Auburn three times this year. At tackle, Dylan Wonnum of Tucker (Ga.) has emerged as a key recruit. He said Wednesday the Tigers stand out. South Carolina and LSU are the other teams to watch.

DEFENSIVE LINE ...

COMMITS: 1 (Daquan Newkirk, DE/DT)

SPOTS TO FILL: 3-4

411: Auburn could use another tackle or two and at least two ends/bucks. One end target, Andres Fox of Mobile Christian (Ala.) could have a decision soon and he lists Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Stanford as the favorites. That one could go either way. At tackle, 4-star target Coynis Miller will announce after the season. Florida leads with Auburn No. 2. At the buck end/linebacker spot, Auburn seems poised to land 4-star target Richard Jibunor (pictured) of Athens Christian (Ga.). He choice reveal his choice in the next month.

LINEBACKER ...

COMMITS: 1 (Michael Harris)

SPOTS TO FILL: 1-2

411: JJ Peterson (pictured) of Colquitt County (Ga.), Quay Walker of Cordele (Ga.) Crisp County and Channing Tindall of Spring Valley (S.C.) -- all 4-star recruits -- are the top targets. Peterson is an Alabama lean. Walker is a Tide commit but some think is flippable.

DEFENSIVE BACK ...

COMMITS: 4 (Kolbi Fuqua, Josh Marsh, Quindarious Monday, Jamien Sherwood)

SPOTS TO FILL: 1-2

411: All four committed here are likely safeties. Marsh is a safety/star type. That means Auburn has work to do at cornerback. There, 4-star Clemson cornerback commit Kyler McMichael (pictured) of Georgia is the top target. His commitment to Clemson is shaky at best.

So we're not even listing McClain as a target anymore at LB?

It sounds like we are backing off McClain some due to the headache his recruitment has been so far. I imagine if he actually does visit again things pick back up. A lot of Quay Walker smoke tho and if T-WILL thinks he can beat out FSU for the flip we might pass on McClain

Personally, I hope we take McClain but I get why coaches might be frustrated. Dude constantly says he's gonna visit then doesn't. I don't think he's a bad kid but he's not handled his recruitment all that well

Wasn't sure to be honest. People continue to ask on a yearly basis if we can sign 25. For the most part I have gotten to where I don't assume anyone knows the rules on numbers. Was no disrespect to you. It was just a thorough answer.

To add to what paw said, Keith's article only covers top targets. ZM is still a target but has likely made himself into a Plan B for the moment.

Good interview from JLee with Coach Porter about December signing options & plans. This was before Hill committed.

-9 of 11 commits plan to sign with AU in December
-Marsh, Shedrick, Sherwood, Joey, & Newkirk are January enrollies
-Of the other 6 only Irvin & Shivers don't plan to sign in December as of now
-Porter says AU will respect their decision & feelings but AU will push for commits to sign in December so the recruits and staff can focus on other things

I don't think McClain is that great. I would MUCH rather take a big, rangy guy like Walker or Peterson than McClain (who also doesn't seem to be that trustworthy).
