I'm glad that Jeff Long admitted making a mistake hiring JLS to run things in 2012 because it now gives me more faith in Long. I liked John L but never should anyone be put in the position he was hired for when they have totally mismanaged their own finances and have other life events stressing them out. The man referred to our team as 'Alabama' in a presser for crying out loud. He was under way to much stress.

I know JLS meant well, but damn...

The last 20 months Im sure have been incredibly stressful for him, do you think he's going to fix another dumpster fire right as the hogs are turning the corner?

No way. Especially with the lack of patience at Ann Arbor compared to fayetteville.

Regarding Long to Michigan- not happening. Long wants Mike Slives job.

I hope you and I both are right because I agree. Big Man has gained a lot of respect this year with me and I don't see him as the type who would abandon what he has worked so hard to establish when he and Jen can visit Florida and their in-laws whenever they wish...and vice versa. And Michigan would be an awful decision, from my viewpoint. Michigan can find more appropriate hire for their program without trying to hire ours.

Lawd...please grant him the wisdom.

I think you may have nailed it concerning Long...in the long run.

Ive come to view the JLS decision as a net positive. An AD in a weak position could easily have made a panic hire and set the program even further back. If we continue the current trend, that lame duck season has to be viewed as a necessity.

Good point. It's turning out to look this way. It just really sucked at the time.

Agreed. It was an embarassing diaster because it turned out that JLS was a total clown, but it also reinforced to Long the importance of getting the long term hire right. He had to strike the right balance of getting someone who knew how to win, how to manage and develop student-athletes, and build and maintain a program the right way.

ON the live shad or small perch, absolutely. Love flathead.

But, blues will bite the crap our of cut bait shad as well.

Two summers ago I brought home 60 pds of fillets in two nights off of two lines only. Awesome time. Not to mention the huge striper we caught on a jug by chasing it all over the lake

Obviously a lot of speculation in this post, but assuming they fire Hoke and we continue to improve this season, wouldn't he be a better choice than Lester and many others?

No way. He just spent a decade owning the Big Ten. He came here for a new challenge.

This. He just left a good situation in the Big Ten to take over a dumpster fire of a program and pull it out of the gutter, and he's hauling in highly rated 'croots left and right and finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel.

He'd actually be a good choice for the Michigan job because of his experience and because his brand of football epitomizes their identity, but I don't see either side being interested. Plus, this year has further highlighted the gap between the college football power conferences and the Big Ten. The SEC West might get two teams into the playoff and the Big Ten might very well get shut out if Michigan State and Ohio State both lose another game.

He may want it, but pretty sure he will have no chance getting it.

Not knocking Long, but in the modern age of college sports there has been a definite trend to guys with JD's from law schools. Not saying I agree with this trend, but it seems to be a trend in the real world.

As for Michigan, would Long go there for an AD's job or Presidents job? With all the hot water in Ann Arbor and a wife who is from there, that would be the better question. If his relatives are still up in OH and her relatives are still up in MI it would seem a possibility.

Michigan would want Long? Their fans don't like the current AD (former Domino's CEO) because over-commercialization bolstering revenues and phasing out of gameday traditions. (band, etc)

LINK

quote:

It isn’t easy to have a profitable program without upsetting fans deeply rooted in tradition. Athletic administrators such as Athletic Director Dave Brandon and Lochmann and have learned that the hard way.

Over the last few years, they’ve partnered with sponsors like Chobani, which sponsors tweets, and Lowes, which sponsors score updates from around the country. On top of that, there’s the Athletic Department’s $84 million, 12-year partnership with IMG — the owner of the University's media rights — that contractually allows for advertisements, Lochmann confirmed.

And though commercialization is within the Athletic Department’s contractual rights, it doesn’t mean fans are always receptive.

Last year, a macaroni and cheese noodle from Kraft in the north side of the stadium upset fans enough that it was removed from the premises within a week. The marching band, once used as the primary form of entertainment, is replaced by music played through the speakers.

“If it wasn’t broke, don’t break it,” Bacon said, referring to the organic Michigan Marching Band chants that once held the place of piped in music. “Yes, things change, and I get that.”

“The most fundamental thing occurred organically, from students, fans, the band, the ‘Go Blue’ cheer,” he added. “We don’t need a scoreboard to tell us when to say ‘Go Blue’ — we do that together. That is a place that doesn't need to be programmed.”

University alum Ari Schorr, a marketing professional with Microsoft in Seattle, understands that over time, Michigan athletics will become more of a business.

“It doesn’t bother me, it’s just something we have to accept about college sports,” Schorr said. “There is a commercialization in that it’s almost like a professional sport.”

At the end of the day, Michigan isn’t a professional sport. It’s part of what people like Jersevic pride about being a “Michigan Man.” After all, if Michigan is one of the “leaders and best,” does it need advertisements to sell its brand?

“It doesn’t bother me to the point where I wouldn’t come back,” Jersevic said. “I think it detracts from the Michigan tradition.”

JLS was the perfect patsy for that season.

His job was to speak in public, handle the press, etc. Beyond that the actual coaching was left in the hands of guys were were paraded as being among the best for their positions as coaches. Several had support to be named Interim HC and had some lobbying for that towards Long.

Long gave each a chance to prove their worth to be considered as HC with no pressure/excuse of having to unexpectedly take over the HC duties, the result was the "stars" ending up at places like Moscow, Kent St. and as a TE coach in Opelika.

Some talent pool, so JLS is the patsy, all the blame is placed up on him, he is rewarded a fair wage for the burden, Long gets to clean house with no "but he's such a great coach", Bert makes immediate upgrades and holds the best of the bunch for a one year transition and upgrades coaching at his position, everyone forgets this same coach is who Long initially named as interim HC before bringing in JLS.
