But I don't concern myself much with Jeff Long. He will do whatever he feels is in his best interest.

True, but Long is definitely the type of guy we need leading the athletic department. People can say what they want about the guy, but his last 3 major sport hires (JLS doesn't count) were Bret Bielema from Wisconsin, Mike Anderson from Mizzou, and Bobby Petrino from the Atlanta Falcons. The two football hires alone sent shockwaves throughout the college football landscape. In addition to having us in great financial shape and being universally respected, the guy is good at hiring coaches and staying out of their way.

I yield to no one in my love of Frank Broyles, but we've come a long way from our athletic department being run by a cabal of boosters and former players. For some odd reasons, the idiots among our fan base want to get back to that and have someone like Ken Hatfield as AD, and the prospect of getting stuck in the past again quite frankly scares me. That's the type of athletic department Bielema just left, and I wouldn't doubt having an old school, penny-pinching former coach as an AD wasn't exactly ideal when you're trying to maintain a competitive football program in the era of expensive assistants and the need for continuous facilities upgrades to keep up in recruiting.

I'll argue with you on that point that yeah, it does.
Even Long admitted that in hindsight, he made a mistake.
On paper, it looked like a logical thing on many fronts.
However, we know how far it set us back.

75% great hires isn't a bad percentage though.

You can't call a dude that pays himself over a million a year and bonuses himself 6 figures for coaching a bowl game a penny pincher.

It is the main reason I love living in the south. You know what they say...

Once you go south
you never go back

I just try not to get too caught up in whether Jeff Long stays or leaves. It gives me heartburn.
But I agree on all your points and the part in bold does concern me as it does you. I hope we never see anything like that again.

I fried myself some catfish today. And ya know I did then?

I ate it! ...and it was G-O-O-D!

True. I wonder if stuff like that factored into Bert's decision. His assistants are looking for jobs elsewhere because they can't get raises, meanwhile Alvarez is one of the highest paid ADs in the country.

It doesn't count because it wasn't a long term hire and was never intended to be. Anyone else -- Butch Davis, Phil Fulmer, a mid-major coach -- would've wanted a multi year deal. Plus, I think Paul Petrino would've been worse (he's 1-15 at Idaho) if we'd have given him the interim tag.

JLS was an obvious disaster, but that season was always going to go to shite the minute Petrino went over the handle bars.

Ive come to view the JLS decision as a net positive. An AD in a weak position could easily have made a panic hire and set the program even further back. If we continue the current trend, that lame duck season has to be viewed as a necessity.

Evidently, someone else caught it but I did the next best thing by liberating it from my freezer. It was begging.

But I do love to fish. I love catfish but also crappie, bass, trout, etc...love cooking it too.

I feel bad for JLS... I mean not that bad, he got a fat paycheck out of it... but in the sense you could tell he just was not up to coaching a high profile team in the SEC West. At a small Division II program somewhere in the middle of nowhere he'd have probably done a good job.

This actually scares me. Could you imagine his system with the type of athletes at a program like Florida? Add in Shannon and his ties to Fl. His wife is from FL.

Damn!

I don't think he goes anywhere though until he feels like he has accomplished what he came here to do.
