I think we'll be 'okay' next year, but not '2nd in the SEC' good. In other words, not quite as good as this year unless Whitt comes in and tears it up AND Kingsley improves inside.

You greatly undervalue what Arkansas has coming back while over-valuing what the rest of the SEC has or will have next season.

I may be wrong, but when we struggled offensively this season it seemed as though that's when Qualls was going through his shooting struggles.

I'd love to have Portis back, but Qualls put this team on his back quite a few times this year and at the end of the season. Portis just seemed to completely run out of gas.

Qualls might have lead down the stretch, but Portis was the primary reason we got into the tournament. We can replace his rebounding and defense. But I don't think we can replace his scoring on the block unless Moses improves a lot.

We won't need to replace all of his scoring on the block, our back court will be significantly better and deeper.

You are severely underestimating our returning roster.

Right now, the only one that has consistently produced points for us that will be returning is (possibly) Qualls. Maybe someone else (or two) will start consistently contributing in double digits. Don't know who that will be though.

This. Good programs move on.

Am I missing something -- other than possibly losing Portis, why is it assumed we're taking a monster step back? I'm generally on over-realistic-bordering-on-negative mindset when it comes to Hog hoops (the scars of the last decade are still healing), but even I think this team will be fine.

I'd be more bleak if Qualls was leaving as well, but if he returns I'm optimistic for our season.

Been really quiet still on the Portis front. Other than those couple of tweets, nothing really rock solid out there.

Portis was with the team yesterday when they were touring the new practice facility.

So I dunno...

Pygmillion needs to chill the F out.

Won't make the NCAA losing 1 player? Geeze man.

People are SERIOUSLY underestimating Kapita, Thompson and Kingsley. Those three alone will shore up rebounding and add some decent offense. Thompson is much more skilled than anyone gives him credit and he has made leaps and bounds losing weight and changing his body. Kingsley should make a big jump as well.
Kapita is going to be a rebounding machine. Derek Hood style.

We now have 2 more slots to add players as well. I look for Fraziar and a JUCO big/swingman to sign up.

Guard play will be HUGELY improved and Qualls will carry us. He'll probably average 8 RPG himself next year. I expect full beast mode from him.

We'll be fine, possibly better than last year. And it's always good sending players to the NBA early. I never honestly expected Portis to stay, he's making the right decision without a doubt. And so is Qualls.

WPS, so glad to finally be excited year after year for basketball.

There's only one person saying that.

And he's been saying it since December. He's too invested now. He would probably prefer the Hogs miss the tournament so his prediction will be correct. Look for him to root against Arkansas next season.

Well if Portis has been told he will be drafted in a comfortable spot and given a nice contract who can blame him? I think he still needs to work on some aspects of his game, but if he gets drafted by a team that doesn't need him to be a superstar right off the bat he'll have time to develop in the league.

Given how far off next season is I won't start worrying about it right now. Now if we look like crud in preseason games or the first few games of the season then we can start to worry.

He will have all the time he needs to work on his game, with professional coaches.

No practice time limits, and he's getting paid.

He should go if he's top 20, which I think he will be.

I think a lot of people in this thread are seriously under-valuing Bobby Portis. Isn't he the first SEC POY we've had in like 20+ years? He'll likely go in the NBA lottery. He was incredibly important in our path towards reaching the tournament. Qualls has come a long way, but he and Portis together are what made the team formidable.

I'm not saying we CAN'T do just as well without Portis. But it's unlikely considering that we have to make an assumption that true freshmen will acclimate immediately.

Not impossible, but not likely. I tend to think if we make the tournament Mike will have done a better job of "coaching up" his team than in previous years. But that's based solely on my belief that Portis has been the best Arkansas basketball player in 10+ years, at minimum.

I worry that Qualls will be our only legit returning scorer.
