I have to think that it was probably a corner blitz and that the safety should've stayed back, but who knows...one of the DBs must've missed the call...

I thought so too watching it live, but I read an article from USC's 247 site where a mod stated Pendergast runs a very aggressive defense and it's common for him to call something like that.

I guess he figured a true freshman wouldn't pick up the read like Hurts did.

Western Kentucky at #1 Alabama

When: Saturday, Sept. 10, 3:30 p.m. ET

Last meeting: Alabama beat Western Kentucky 35-0 in September 2012.

What to watch for

Western Kentucky (1-0) opened the defense of its Conference USA title with a 46-14 win over Rice, getting 517 passing yards and three touchdowns from South Florida transfer Mike White. The Hilltoppers have wins over SEC teams in three of the last four seasons, winning at Vanderbilt to open 2015 and beating Kentucky in 2012 and 2013.

Alabama (1-0) destroyed USC in a 52-6 blowout, buoyed by true freshman Jalen Hurts' four total touchdowns. The Crimson Tide have won 13 straight games and haven't fallen to a non-Power Five team since 2007, when Nick Saban's first Tide squad dropped a 21-14 decision to Louisiana-Monroe.

As impressive as White's performance was against Rice, he won't get enough time to come close to that number against Alabama.

Prediction: Alabama 46, Western Kentucky 20

Lol, what?

Just no.
what exacty are you saying no to? All of those things i said are true. Hurts 1st td pass the db pushed stewart out of bounds then lost track of him, no one was within 5 yards. The second td was a 10 yard throw where the cb and safety both blitzed by mistake.

now that BB settled down I think we have 2 QB's who are confident on leading this team to the SEC title. So I dont think we can lose either way.

Correct me if I am wrong but BB had two series and did not move the team. Hurts had two series and nothing really happened. It was in the third series where Hurts had the team to our first TD. So within those first two series it was even steven on the score board and Hurts had the one TO.

NS was correct when he said we had no long sustained drives. This will need to be corrected in the next two games due to WKU and OM running a hurry up spread O. So whereas the homeruns are great we need someone who can lead us to an 8 minute drive that results in a TD. This will wear out a D and by the 4th QB we will dominate playing smashmouth football.

Was just skimming through this thread, and wanted to add something

BB did not come back in the game till the game was over because...

That look in his eyes.

Anyone here that denies they saw it is clueless. CNS even told the halftime broadcaster that BB did not look comfortable.

Hurts never had that look. Hurts came into the game with the team trailing, and he never had nothing but an ice cold look in his eyes.

This is probably why BB seems to meltdown during the scrimmages. He gets shook under pressure, and that to me is the scariest thing about BB.

Hurts makes it 11 vs 11 on offense, and that is the future of the game.

The blitz was a corner SS blitz. The FS was supposed to slide over but didn't. It was sort of a bust but the call was right. Hurts waited for them to come then released to Stewart seeing the fs stay center

that was a DA call by their DC. Hurts had already proven in the previous series that he is cool as a cucumber plus he has wheels to avoid the rush. I love what Hurts brings to the table and this may change our QB recruiting going forward.

Also, NS got a lot of mileage but not telling USC who the starter and back up were. So not sure they game planned much for Hurts. Keeping things secret is part of his coaching strategy and I suspect he will do the same thing going into the OM game. Make Hugh, the teeth, Freeze game plan for two GB's

Gotcha...I had figured one of the blitzing DBs screwed up, but I didn't think 'bout it being the free safety...

I'm curious to hear how you know what USC's call was and that the call was right. Herbie disagreed with you on the broadcast as to what went wrong with the D on that call.

That's what impressed me about it. He recognized it and attacked the space that was left. A lot of young guys might have seen it and tried to go away from it. He went after the soft space and made them pay for it.

So they did a breakdown I watched and in the call it clearly shows the DB turn and SS creep up indicating a blitz. The FS makes a motion like he concurs and then stays center while Stewart runs past the corner who is blitzing. The FS on that play according to the video should have played the free receiver.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Coming off the big win over Southern Cal last week, everyone has been patting Alabama on the back.

The Crimson Tide dismantled the Trojans, which reaffirmed Alabama’s place at the top of college football. Nick Saban has heard and read the praise being heaped on his team, and spent all week trying to fight against it ahead of Alabama’s home opener against Western Kentucky on Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

“I think our players need to understand that how you play in games like this, if things don’t go well, that’s basically what you get remembered by,” Saban said. “They’ll be asking you 20 years from now, ‘How’d you guys lose that game?'”

It hasn’t been two decades, but Alabama’s home loss in Saban’s first season (2007) to Louisiana Monroe is still mentioned. Same goes for Michigan’s home loss to Appalachian State that same year. Programs of this caliber aren’t allowed to lose or even play close games against lesser opponents.

It’s easy to look at the names — Southern Cal and Western Kentucky — and automatically assume one is better than the other. But that’s not the case in Saban’s eyes.

Western Kentucky finished last season with a 12-2 record, including 8-0 in Conference USA play. The Hilltoppers ended the year ranked in the top 25.

Like Alabama, the Hilltoppers were dominant in their season opener against Rice last weekend.

Western Kentucky won their 13th consecutive game against a league opponent in the 46-14 victory over Rice. Making his debut with the Hilltoppers, junior quarterback Mike White threw for 517 yards on 25-of-31 passing with three touchdowns. It was just the third 500-yard performance in school history and ties for 10th in C-USA history. White’s 98.3 quarterback rating was the highest rating by an FBS quarterback in Week 1 in the last 10 years, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

Western Kentucky receiver Taywan Taylor caught five passes for 165 yards in the opener. Receiver Nicholas Norris hauled in seven passes for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Western Kentucky prefers to spread teams out defensively so we’ll get plenty of looks at Alabama’s secondary in its nickel and dime packages.

Linebacker T.J. McColllum led the Hilltoppers with 12 tackles. The group intercepted two passes. Saturday’s contest isn’t going to be a cakewalk for Alabama.

“These guys play with a lot of toughness and energy. They’ve got a lot of confidence,” Saban said. “They score a lot of points on offense. They’ve got one of the most prolific passing attacks that we’re going to see and some very good players to implement. And they play really tough, physical defensive football. This is a good team. … We had two teams in our league that actually lost to teams that were nowhere near this good. Nowhere near what they accomplished a year ago. Nowhere near the number of players coming back.

“These are not things that we can take at all for granted. We need to get ready to play this game as if we’re playing a really good football team, because we are.”

Correct that's where the breakdown was. It was clear they were all communicating and by the looks of it the FS didn't slide over or someone didn't drop into coverage. Doesn't matter we scored

BB speed In high school did not translate here. He is average speed at best. Not a big deal really unless we were relying on his legs.

I have a question if any of you all can answer I would appreciate it.

I noticed Jalen when he is throwing the deep ball he looks like he is throwing a javelin. My question is this the reason for the under throw? If so that's an easy fix I would think. Like teaching Henry how to pass block, just something he wasn't taught in HS.

Not knocking his play, huge supporter of his, just curious that's all.

He didn't underthrow. He is just really late on his read progression. The kids actually has a rocket.

We have to understand he is a true freshman. He has much growing and adapting to do. One of those adaptations is getting through his reads quicker.

Another adsptation would be playing faster. Anyone who has played beyond high school can atest to playing slower until they got comfortable with the system. Once you became completely comfortable you played faster, reacted quicker, etc..

My hope is we see this process move along sooner rather than later. I'm assuming that is why Saban just played him the majority of the reps Saturday. Get him further along.
