if fans like you coached the team, every new, shiny, 5 star who came in and did well in a scrimmage game against the #2 defense would start and Bama would have a 6-6 record every year.

More often than not, when a shiny 5 star does well in the spring game, he gets significant playing time during the fall. Just saying.

Chris Black and Blake Barnett say hello.

Black was marred by injury his entire time at UA, and he never looked like a superstar anyway. Barnett looked okay last year in the spring game but I don't recall him doing anything too remarkable.

Besides, I said "more often than not."

I'll add that I'm on the Hurts bandwagon. To me he looks better than Barnett both as a runner and as a passer (Barnett's throwing motion looks terrible). I think Hurts has the potential to be a Russell Wilson or D. Watson type player for us....but remember that even those guys weren't stars as true freshmen. The QB position usually takes at least a full year to grasp at the college level even for the greats. History backs that up...who's that last true freshman QB to win a natty? Serious question.

Black had periods of health and still basically sucked. Barnett had an OK spring game but was blowing people away in other spring scrimmages. Almost everyone thought he was going to beat out Coker as a TF. D. Hand is another 5-star who flashed early but didn't really develop until late his sophomore year. Cyrus K is yet another...I can go on. Very rare for a TF to be ready at any position outside of maybe RB/WR and especially at QB which is the most difficult position on the field to play by a long distance.

I don't disagree with any of this.

I doubt a true freshman has ever won a NC, in modern times at least. We'll see. The coaches will make the best decision, I don't think anyone can argue with that.

There's a reason we've only had 2 or 3 starters in the history of the program.

More than that...there have been 5: Walter Lewis, Vince Sutton, Danny Woodson, Andrew Zow, and Blake Sims. Lewis played a big part of Bama's '81 SEC championship and led 'em to back-to-back bowl victories in the '82 and '83 seasons. Sutton didn't start many games, but I still remember watching him come in late in the '88 Kentucky game and lead Bama to a dramatic late comeback throwing 2 TD passes in the last 5 minutes of the game. Woodson also only started a few games, but he started Bama off on their 28-game win streak ('91-'93) but got suspended later in that '91 season. Zow left as Bama's career passing yards leader and led Bama to an SEC Championship in '99. And, as we all know, Sims led us to an SEC Championship and the inaugural CFP, and holds the Bama single season passing yards record.

Are people really freaked out about the QBs?

I thought all of them looked fine. Hurts and Barnett looked like they knew what they were doing, Bateman seemed to have control of the offense.

I feel much better about our group of QBs coming out of spring than I did the last 2 seasons.

Not at QB. And, just as many shiny, 5 stars barely see the field except on special teams.

I stated that the 5 stars that show out in A-day usually get significant playing time the following season. I'm not talking about every 5-star that we sign, regardless of how well they do. I'm talking about the Ronnie Harrisons, Minkah Fitzpatricks, TJ Yeldons, etc.

I realize that QB is a different animal, which is why I said that I don't believe that we've ever had a freshman QB that has looked as poised and talented as Hurts looked on Saturday.

Look, the coaches will make the best decisions. People get upset for some reason when we say that we believe that Hurts has a chance. Its not anything anyone should get pissed about. Come on guys.

Are you saying you think Bama is going to start a freshman QB, or not? I said "no". Are you disagreeing?

We all know he looks talented.

I should have said that I wasn't talking about you, I didn't think you were getting upset.

I'm saying that I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility, and if it ever were to happen, I think it would happen this season.

I'm not upset. It's just monday all up in here. I may have gotten annoyed at the guy that suggested that the reason people weren't clamoring to start a true freshman QB was because he's black.

Anyway, Hurts looked good. I just think there's about a 2% chance of him starting in year one. Depending on how the other guys do, though, he may run away with the job in his second year.

What years have we done this?

Arguably 2010, but that would be the only one. Even then, we had a starter who was a 5th year senior coming off an undefeated national championship year.

What I got excited about didn't have much to do with pure talent jumping off the screen. Hurts was so money on short and midrange throws. I think he has EXACTLY what it takes to make Kiffin's offense run smooth.

He made them look sooo easy. Even when they were covered or there was traffic in the area of the throw, he put them exactly where the receiver needed the ball. The throw to Harris where he threw it low and sorta behind him(because a LB or S was on the other side of Harris) was perfect. Half of Kiffin's offense is quick hitting passes and timing stuff that gets a defense on their toes and having to worry about defending sideline to sideline. Hurts made it look easy.

ETA: I'm not claiming he has to be the starter. I don't care who wins the job. Saban has proven that he knows what he's doing, many times over. My post was just an observation of what I saw on Saturday.

Folks relax, we have plenty of talent at QB. Our Offense will see minimal drop off if any with OJ and Foster back. Scar and Harris for a 1-2. Not to mention our Def is straight nasty.

Did Bateman not make more mistakes than Hurts? I realize he was going against the 1s. That might have been why he looked timid and whatnot, I'm not sure. Not sure I saw an incredibly experienced QB who doesn't make mistakes, though.

This defense is going to be ridiculous. Goodness gracious is it going to be stout. I argued a few times after last season that I think it has a chance to be on par with or better than last year's defense and got laughed at a bit. I still hold that opinion, though.
