If he can do what he’s done at Clemson, what can he do at Alabama? We wouldn’t miss a beat.

There is no way Dabo leaves Clemson and he will be the first one we call.

CNS's contract and Dabo's run to te same end date currently, is that just by chance? I think not. The stars are aligning for Dabo's return Home. (but as everyone says "don't be the man that replaces the man"

Yes. You will never see Saban stay til the end of his contract. They will keep extending it because as soon as it gets below 4 or 5 years remaining he will lose a recruiting advantage.

I don't either. I mean, he's obviously a pretty good coach, but he's not in Saban's universe.

I'm going to enjoy having Saban for as long as he'll coach and try to ignore all the clamoring for goofy Dabo. I predict by the time Saban retires, the shine will have worn off Dabo. If not, and he's still churning out championship level teams, then by all means, let's talk about him then.

Nobody is calling for Dabo to replace Saban right now. Not one person. We’re all enjoying the ride.

However considering our hiring track record after our last legendary coach, it’s natural for people to speculate about what’s next. In this case, we have a young, championship winning coach with strong ties to Alabama that could replace Saban one day. He’s arguably built the second best program in the nation. Just because he doesn’t lurch around with a pissed off look on his face like Bryant, Stallings, or Saban, doesn’t mean he’s not an elite coach.

Nobody is saying he doesn't lurch around with a pissed off look on his face like Bryant, Stallings, or Saban. Not one person.

I just don't think he's going to sustain what he's done. He doesn't strike me as intelligent enough.

The good news is, we'll find out.

I never thought of Coach Bryant lurching around with a pissed off look. I know some of the players kind of feared him, but in public he was generally a very gentle fellow. Hard living, on his own time, rendered him a tough looking visage, but that aside....

How long does he have to sustain it?

He's on his way to his 7th straight season with 10 or more wins. If he wins the ACC again it will be his 4th conference and 6th division title in 9 full seasons as head coach.

The only other FBS coaches with that level of sustained success in the last decade are Urban Meyer and Nick Saban.

That's all fine, but two years ago we were laughing about how weak the ACC was. Let's not pretend he did that against the SEC West of 2007-2014.

You guys can like him all you want. I'm just saying I'm not blown away by him. If he looks like the best option when Saban retires, fine.

It’s hyperbole. Clearly Saban, Bryant, & Stallings bring a different brand of personality to the table than Dabo.

You don't have to like them to think they're impressive. Imagine an 18 ft venomous snake that can raise the front 1/3 of it's body high enough off the ground to look you in the eye.

Anyway, I don't dislike Dabo, and I'm not saying he should never coach at Bama. I'm just not sold yet. But, he's also young. I probably wouldn't have been sold on Saban 25 years ago.

Sorry I had a fight in the middle of your black panther party. Carry on.

I do think the logical follow-up has to be..........if not Dabo who?

The list of coaches I'd put in the same "league" with Dabo that are currently coaching in college would be

- Chris Peterson (Washington)
- Urban Meyer (Ohio State)
- Jim Harbaugh (Michigan)

That next group would probably be
- James Franklin (Penn St)
- Jimbo Fisher (Florida St)
- David Shaw (Stanford)
- Mark Dantonio (Michigan St)

The only guys on that list that I think we might have any shot at convincing to come to Alabama and could possible be decent fits would be : Dabo, Franklin, Fisher.

Of course, new names could emerge, current fringe guys could continue to show their chops (Fuente, Kirby, etc), so the landscape could change.

They're the only team other than Bama to win 10 or more games every year since 2011. With a mediocre program. He's the only current coach other than Saban to sustain.

Who do you prefer as Saban's successor?

That is really the right answer, A coaching hire is, more than any single factor, defendant on the timing of the vacancy. If Saban is here another 5 years (which isn't unreasonable at all) it is a virtual certainty that other names will have emerged and some current names will have faded.

Yep - no doubt. And, the willingness of certain coaches to listen may have changed depending on all sorts of factors.

However, there are still only (and will only) be a handful of truly elite coaches, resume wise. Assuming Clemson doesn't implode, Dabo will still be one of those in 5 years, and he has a direct and still pumping connection to the University of Alabama. It's just difficult for me to find someone else of the same resume level that also has what appears to be an exploitable area for us to steal him away.

But we'll see.

I haven't put any thought into it because Saban hasn't retired and doesn't seem to be ready to do so. I have no idea who I'll like when the time comes.
