He should have made more than 1 tournament with that 2011 recruiting class.

I know Grant couldnt help it that Tony Mitchell and Devonta Pollard went rogue or that Trevor Lacey transfered but still we should have made the tournament in 2011 and 2013 and probably even 2015 but failed to do so.

Completely agree. And that's why he's not still coaching here.

He left Avery a very talented defensive squad.....but ZERO offensive talent.

I'd take making the tournament period, but I feel like anything comfortably in would be a realistic goal. 7-10 seed.

Anything better than that I just have a hard time wrapping my head around.

Yeah Grant's last team was okay, but we lost the three leading scorers from that team heading into Avery's first year. We were picked to finish 13th in the SEC that year. The starting lineup was

Ingram- a 3* true freshman ranked in the 200s
Retin- 6th man on the team the year prior
Edwards- marginal role player at New Mexico the year prior
Kessens- at FIU now
Jimmie- solid defender but serious limits in his game

Also, there were only 10 eligible scholarship players on that team. Grant left us in a ditch.

I might be remembering the original starting lineup that season slightly wrong. Riley or Hale might've started. I remember at the end of the season it was Retin, Edwards, Norris, Kessens, Taylor

Kessens was a Senior at 26 years old?

Never realized he was the old.

Damn shame he was that weak playing against guys 4-5 years younger than him.

I thought Kessens transfered out after Grant got canned.

I'm starting to get a little nervous about all the hype this team is receiving. I'd much rather fly under the radar. They are building us up for a colossal fall if something goes wrong. Will the media just please STFU about Bama basketball until we explode onto the court?

How important is style of play to y'all this year or do you even care as long as we win? For the last 7 years, we've consistently heard we want to play an exciting, up tempo brand of basketball. Then again, every coach in the country says that. According to KenPom, we've been 318 and 302 in the country in adjusted tempo under Johnson. As long as we win, I don't really care, but I do hope we pick up the pace some and run more. I don't think the excuse about not having the right guys can be used anymore.

I'm like you. As long as we win I don't really care. I would like to see it though. We have 3 very athletic big men, one of the fastest point guards in the country who has shown a recent knack for distributing (and lob passes) and we have 3 or 4 very athletic wings (Ingram, Petty, Jones, and Davis) who can shoot. There's no reason we can't go uptempo.

Alabama didn't have a guard that could dribble a basketball and chew gum at the same time. You've got to be able to effectively rebound the ball, get it out to a guard who can make good decisions, and have kids who can/will run the court and fill the lanes...it's easier said than done.

edit: this new kid we've recruited looks like the guy who can make it happen.

I don't care as long as we win. I don't like seeing bad shots and turnovers, regardless of the tempo, and I think that's something that needs to be cleaned up.

A slow tempo game can be great to watch if we execute some semblance of an offense and don't just go to sleep. Hopefully we'll have a more balanced inside/outside game this year and will open up what we can do.

It's great that the core of this team has bought in defensively over the past couple of years. It's good to be able to fall back on a good defense when the offense is struggling.

Yea I don't care either. Just hate seeing us dribble ball around til bout 5 seconds left on shot clock and jack up a contested prayer

You're right about efficiency. We've been 164 and 153 in offensive efficiency under Johnson which is essentially the middle of the pack. That's gotta improve.

This is the final weekend of EYBL. Teams are trying to qualify for the Peach Jam. You can read more about that here. LINK

MEBO (Woodard, Stewart, and Butler), Nike Team Florida (Watford), and RM5 (coached by Mo Williams) are all bubble teams.

Good 3-point shooters and an offensive minded big man will do wanders for efficiency ratings.
