Brian Kelly Shares His Thoughts On Neutral Site Games

Coach Brian Kelly spoke to the media on Monday ahead of LSU's season opener vs. Florida State in New Orleans on Sunday.

Kelly said the team would head into town on Saturday night and do a workout in the Superdome on Sunday morning before the game. After revealing his gameday plan, Kelly was asked about his opinion on neutral site games...

Q. Are you a fan of these neutral site games, and will you encourage the university to have them as part of the menu moving forward?

BRIAN KELLY: You know, I think each one of them needs to be looked at as a stand-alone. I think it's important to look at New Orleans as a site because of our fan base. I think we need to look at areas where we have strong fan bases and consider those as neutral site games. I did them quite regularly where I was last year, and certainly the fan bases rallied around those.

If we feel like those can sell out those venues and make it feel like a home game, you have to decide to give up a Tiger Stadium game. That's a hard thing to do, right? Because of what this stadium does for a home field advantage.

Next season, the Tigers will travel to Orlando to face the Seminoles at Camping World Stadium.

I'd rather have gone to Madison 10/10 instead of Lambeau. If i want a pro atmosphere, I'll go to a pro football game. @Texas was way more fun than at Lambeau

That’s an Arkansas thing. The piggies think that Dallas is to them what Houston is to LSU (which it isn’t). The Arkansas in state football talent is thin at best so they try to develop some out of state interest in Dallas.

I've always like the neutral site games but I think its being overdone now. The Old "kickoff classic" at the meadowlands was a novelty then in 2008 the Chik Fil A classic started and now there are 4 or 5 but I enjoy them. I couldn't care less what tailgaiting is like on West Virginia's or Florida States campus.

It depends on the venue. If it's somewhere like New Orleans, Dallas, Vegas, or Green Bay, I think they're great. I'm not too excited about Orlando.

Yeah the worst part about the two neutral site games with FSU is that we play them in fricking Orlando.

Neutral sites are good as long as it is against a decent P5 team. No one really wants a 7th home game that is Utah State.

I like neutral site games like the one at Lambeau. That's a historic stadium/bucket list stadium. But I'd rather have home and home games. I've been to the Doak before, but I'd go back for LSU.

It’s a necessary evil. As a traveling fan, they are fun as hell. 2011 vs Oregon was one of my favorite trips ever. From a tradition standpoint, it’s not ideal. I’ve been to a hundred games in Tiger Stadium so I like getting to spend a weekend in a new place. Viewing it from a football standpoint…there’s no place like Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night

This is my reasoning for my preference to go to away games for LSU. I've done Tiger Stadium enough times, I'd rather do road games.

I mean, I'm definitely not going to Camping World Stadium, BUT I would definitely go to Doak Campbell.

These "neutral" site games with no tradition suck.

Good point. Not getting to experience the opponent’s campus, stadium & traditions are a bigger loss for the fan than anything

It's hard to argue against games in Dallas, Houston, or New Orleans. They help with recruiting, and the games are drivable for Louisiana residents.

‘They help with recruiting’ wtf does this even mean? Have kids in Houston, NOLA, or Dallas never heard of LSU? These days, if a kid is LSU caliber, they can make it to campus and don’t need this neutral site BS to see the team in person
