Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
Former LSU defensive lineman and current ESPN Football Analyst Booger McFarland appeared on ESPN's College Football Live Thursday and said that Ed Orgeron will not land the head coach job in Baton Rouge at the end of the season.

Here is what he had to say, per 247Sports.com:
quote:

"He can win out and he can beat Alabama convincingly ... I think the powers that be in Baton Rouge - Joe Alleva, F. King Alexander and the Board - I think they're looking for something they've never had," McFarland said. "That's a head coach with an offensive background, a head coach that can bring a young quarterback in here and get some excitement. ... I don't know of anything, in my opinion, that he can do to keep this job."

Fellow analysts David Pollack and Joey Galloway said winning out - which would include victories over Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M - would, and should, be enough for Orgeron to be the Tigers' permanent coach.

"I would love for Coach O to be the coach, he's my type of guy - he's a defensive line coach," McFarland said. "I would love for him to get that job - I'm just giving you the climate of what's down there and what the people want. They want a guy that can be a quarterback whisperer."
What do you think Ed Orgeron needs to do to land the job full-time at the end of the season?

I also want an offensive minded coach but if CEO runs the table, he deserves a sincere consideration to be the permanent head coach with a short term 2 year contract and more time to prove himself. And no, he doesn't have to beat Bama convincingly. He just needs to beat them!

When I told you guys Les was getting fired that Sunday nobody believed me. I also said the one thing the people that were making the call were afraid of was Ed winning out and thus FORCING there hand to keep him. That being said if he wins out he's the coach, plain and simple. He doesn't have to win the Natty UNLESS HE MAKES THE PLAYOFF. Like I said people he needs to win each and every game he plays. He does that then it's his gig. I know this for a fact.

The people want coach O if he can win out convincingly. If Lsu doesnt sign him somebody else will.

I think that winning out should buy both sides a year to see how it goes. Coach O can hire a QB whisperer.

If O runs the table he should and will be the coach. Fans want a winner. That's all.

He's perfect for the LSU job. He is a great recruiter, and a great motivator. I hope he wins out and pisses off the "he doesn't fit what we want" crowd. Cutcliffe was a QB whisperer. Give me O over him any day.

Nailed it. He is starting to fall into the trap of the talking head. Just spout baseless conjecture and hope something sticks.

Bunch of you people are fools... Why wouldn't Herman come here and why is what booger said so negative? He said nothing negative at all!! Geez he also said nothing to the fact of LSU wont be able to win out so coach O has no chance geez. You people are so damn ignorant and negative your selves. A coach doesn't have to clean house when he comes in unless he feels the entire staff isn't doing their job. I would bet no matter who is coming that Aranda and coach O keep their jobs here if they want them. Maybe even a couple more? LSU could very well get on a roll and come up with great gameplans to fool these guys. They basically have no film on our offense now. When before they had 10 years of basically the same offense to study and prepare for. Have you people even followed Herman to say he would fail here is just dumb as frick bc he's been successful everywhere he's been. Not just successful but dominate with much less than LSU has. Not to mention the QBs he could have lining up here. It's the perfect spot for Herman imo. Go Tigers and can't wait to see what this new LSU team can do against OM. We'll see what BeBe has tomorrow.

I like Booger... he is just doing his job and the smart money is on LSU not closing out well enough for CEO to keep the HC job... simple. All of this will work itself out. If this staff ends up with only one loss from here on out without their OC and HC then it would take a Herman hire to keep CEO out of Les' old office. Also, if Herman does come to Red Stick, he needs to keep nearly the entire defensive staff or I would rather not have him here at all.

McFarland recently said "You cut me from the Rooter to the Tooter and I am all Purple and Gold. I have to try and maintain some appearance of impartiality in my job. I was part of the class that started the turnaround at LSU from 95-98 and I will be damned if I not going to try and fix the problem." _________________________________________________________________________ In this same segment he also said LSU is looking for a long-term solution and that football is in the Entertainment business. Alleva has to pay off a 100 million stadium expansion and keep the Boosters donating with championships, top recruits. Everyone talks about how hard it is to get people to stay and watch the games. With Tom Herman you would have people fighting over tickets. Plus Saban takes lessons from Herman. Hire Herman and Saban is old news.

I think O deserves a chance. Remember he does not a hand picked offensive staff and no recruits of his own. I say if he wins all except Alabama he has done a hell of a job and deserves a chance to build his own team. If we hired a new coach there would be a year or 2 of honeymoon.

Deserves it for what? Being a Cajun and a defensive line coach? No!

I've met O a few times, and I have no problem with him being the coach. A great rep for LSU and he, so far, knows to keep his opinion of the offense to himself.

Did Booger become some "top level club donor" and start hanging out with Shaq and think he has some "inside scoop" all of a sudden? If Coach O goes 4-1 or better he gets the job.

I am fed up with Booger's opinions. He is becoming a problem and he runs his mouth and acts like he has some knowledge of tjis situation when he doesn't. A media type is the LAST person who Aleva would confide in and certainly not when it is this early and could hurt LSU's team morale (they have been through enough). Booger's comments are not helpfull and are ill timed.

well at one point he did say les was losing the locker room, les get fired and some of the players started throwing "lo-key" shots at the way he was coaching. pretty sure booger got "plugs" aka sources within the program. respect his opinion

If CEO wins out, LSU will be the national champion. Under those circumstances there is no way LSU moves away from Orgeron.
