Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
Former LSU defensive lineman and current ESPN Football Analyst Booger McFarland appeared on ESPN's College Football Live Thursday and said that Ed Orgeron will not land the head coach job in Baton Rouge at the end of the season.

Here is what he had to say, per 247Sports.com:
quote:

"He can win out and he can beat Alabama convincingly ... I think the powers that be in Baton Rouge - Joe Alleva, F. King Alexander and the Board - I think they're looking for something they've never had," McFarland said. "That's a head coach with an offensive background, a head coach that can bring a young quarterback in here and get some excitement. ... I don't know of anything, in my opinion, that he can do to keep this job."

Fellow analysts David Pollack and Joey Galloway said winning out - which would include victories over Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M - would, and should, be enough for Orgeron to be the Tigers' permanent coach.

"I would love for Coach O to be the coach, he's my type of guy - he's a defensive line coach," McFarland said. "I would love for him to get that job - I'm just giving you the climate of what's down there and what the people want. They want a guy that can be a quarterback whisperer."
What do you think Ed Orgeron needs to do to land the job full-time at the end of the season?

What a dumbass statement. We don't need a offensive minded QB whisperer just because Les couldn't develop one. If Orgeron wins out in convincing fashion, you would have to be insane to not keep him. Who the hell else can convincingly win out with that murderers row of a schedule?

I agree. Doesn't even need to win out if we beat Bama convincingly.

Put it this way: if he wins out, he'll have taken a team that was relying on a transfer quarterback from Purdue who up until Ed O took over looked like he was a barely functioning 3rd stringer on a team with a competent quarterback coach, to a two loss season, both losses occurring prior to O's tenure as head coach, with a real shot at playing in the Playoffs and having beaten the likes of Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas and A&M, as well as having won the SEC Title. In other words, he doesn't need to be a quarterback whisperer. If Booger thinks that's what the fanbase wants, I think he's being wilfully blind. The fanbase wants to win and showcase the talent of the team. It's tired of underachieving. If that means we have to hire a "quarterback whisperer" as a head coach, then so be it. But if that means O just has to go out and hire an assistant coach with a track record of quarterback development, then I think he could and maybe should keep the job.

Nailed it. He is starting to fall into the trap of the talking head. Just spout baseless conjecture and hope something sticks.

If CEO wins out, LSU will be the national champion. Under those circumstances there is no way LSU moves away from Orgeron.

He shouldn't have to win out. He shouldn't even have to beat Bama. If he shows that he's improved this team w/ as little time as he's had he should be taken seriously as a the full-time guy. He appears to be doing all the right things to re-build this team and LSU as brand (getting previous players back into the fold)

With the talent on the roster, I could coach this team to a winning record as interim HC. It's just a testament of how bad Miles was, not the brilliance of the interim coach. If Yaw Yaw wasn't from LA, no one would be knighting for him. His resume as HC is less than terrible. No thanks.

If O runs the table he should and will be the coach. Fans want a winner. That's all.

I think booger hates lsu and tries to hide it. He says nothing positive about us ever.

How is saying LSU won't keep Coach O because in his opinion the powers that be want an offensive minded coach a negative thing? It's his opinion. There is nothing there disparaging about LSU.

I love booger but he's wrong on this one and I'm not quite sure why he would say that.

Maybe because O's record as head coach sucks and because NCAA violations seem to follow him around everywhere he goes.

He flat out tells you why he's saying that and you're not quite sure why he would say that? C'mon man......

Anything less than making it to the playoff, and he's gone. That being said, I'm pulling for Coach O.

Booger also stated- convincingly- that Les would be fired after the A&M game last year no matter the outcome.

He should have been. Actually, he should have been canned after the Ole Miss game. Then, we'd have a better coach and would be contending with our talent and experience.
