When i replaced my springs there was painted markings on then

Correct. This tells you which is the left hand spring and which is the right hand spring. They will only work correctly if wound the correct direction. Also the paint mark , when dome winding , will tell.you how many compete turns are in spring. Usually 7 turns or 28 qtr turns for a 2 car 16x7 standard steel door
