how long before the NCAA eliminates the 5 years to play 4 rule and lets students continue to play for as many years as they want as long as they are enrolled in school?
Irrelevant. The NFL bound players are not even staying 4 years in college. The ones not good enough to ever sniff the NFL would not even be invited back for extra years at a college due to making room for younger players. Even now, we see all the time that clearly some veterans and even new signees are being "processed".
The ONLY way your theory would ever be applied by colleges were if the 85 total scholarship limit went away. Then it would go back to Bud Wilkinson days at Oklahoma where they needed about a half dozen buses to take the players to the games.

We aren't just talking football here. And we aren't just talking LSU.
There are plenty of great college players that just are not pros. And the smaller schools would certainly take a 6th year player that LSU didn't want any longer.
I don't think this will happen, TBH, but I do think there will be a push for it.
My idea has always been to let the players actually play 5 years. 5 to play 5. No redshirting, no extra years, no appeals, etc. You get 5 years, period. No exceptions.
