With the players we had on D last season, we should have had the #1 D in the country.

Ummmmm...really? I am not a Grantham lover. In fact, I MIGHT be a little relieved he is gone. but let's face it...we had talent, but it was all freshmen and sophomores. We ALL knew we were in for a rough time defensively last year. You might have been the only person on this board that thought we would have the #1 defense in the country last year.

It's the head coach's job to make sure the right kids are recruited and the other coaches do their jobs well. Richt put Martinez in that position so...yeah Richt gets the blame.

So. Since Oregon has not won a big game should they fire their head coach? How about Stanford? Ohio State? Oklahoma?

All indicatins are that Grantham was kindly asked to start looking around and that UGA has been working on finding a replacement since last week. Could explain why so many insiders and paysite guys are suggesting that Kirby is a very real possibility.
convo from another board...

One extra thing I wanna post on it this morning.........Richt and McGarity did not talk with Kirby before CTG was gone, but there was a coach that did. When/if Smart heads to Athens, GA.......a big thanks will go to the former QB that wore #14 for the Dawgs. He is not selfish, he has not demanded a raise, but he has tried to get his best friend back to Athens and that says a lot about his character.

Wins or more important to Mike Bobo than becoming a HC at UGA.......and he has proved that by trying to bring KS home to UGA

That would imply that CMB knew that Grantham was headed out the door one way or another ?

They all knew that CTG was headed out the door from what I was told

CTG contacted Louisville about his interest, not the other way around

Of course he did. Grantham is obviously the aggressive personality type/a-hole and Richt is the mild mannered reporter aka Clark Kent.

If true, then Mike Bobo will become my favorite dude ever and I will advocate a super-raise.

And haha, grantham :processed:

Oregon played in 4 BCS bowls in the last 5 years and won 2. Stanford played in BCS bowls the last 4 years and won 2. Oklahoma JUST beat Alabama in the Sugar.

Our last BCS game was 6 years ago.

What are you talking about?

glad he's leaving but Louisville is not a lateral move (as indicated in the AJC.

Y not? What should be suprising is that Louisville is willing to pay its DC more than we are and they also believe he has it in him to coach. We were sure pumped when Grantham first got here, and now, we want to run him outta town. Is it a coach problem, or a UGA problem?

After reading the Athens news, it is clear CTG was on borrowed time. I hope and pray we don't muck this hire.

Not to belittle this information at all, but we did play in the SECCG in two out of the last three years, and because we lost, we were auto-eliminated from a BCS bowl game. Had we come in 2nd in the SEC East rather than 1st for those two years, we probably would have been to two BCS bowl games, which would have invalidated this argument somewhat. Our "success" in the East actually hurt us there.

While valid our lack of success in the SECCG kept up us from having a chance in the NCG and possibly becoming elite.

I agree completely, and if we won the SECCG, we would have potentially played for the MNC (a BCS bowl game).

However, to Waffles' point, we missed out of BCS bowl games due to winning the East, which is an accomplishment it itself, but it hurt us where the Bowls are concerned.

There is a lot of wishful thinking in this thread.

Grantham wasn't asked to leave.
But he knew he was on a short leash (ie. without a top 10 defense, he probably wouldn't be retained. With a top 10 defense, he'd be looking for a promotion greater than the Louisville gig. He had no roots here).

He had 1 year at $850K without anymore lifelines at UGA.
He had an offer for $5M guaranteed over 5 years at Louisville.

This isn't rocket science. He wasn't fired. He wasn't in great graces at UGA. But he isn't stupid, either.

This is my feeling on the matter.

Whether or not it turns out to be a good move will depend on who we hire and how he does.

I might be the only person that was going to give Grantham a pass this year because of losing 8/11 starters. Secondary was below expectations, but DL and linebackers exceeded my expectations.
