Who's redshirting, who's going to be the backup and/or likely starter for 2014? Does this person get alot of playing time this year? Or will the Heisman campaign for Murray get in the way of much playing time for our next in line?

Huston should be the starter not sure who will be his backup.
Will Welch still be here? If not maybe Ramsey or LeMay
Nobody is starting over Murray you can drop that shite right now.

I'm not talking about starting, I'm talking about after we are up 20 points against a cupcake, do we leave Murray in to pad his numbers for the record books and Heisman, or do we put Mason in there?

If Mason (or whoever) is our projected starter for 2014, shouldn't he be getting alot of playing time in 2013?

ETA- here's what I'm getting at.

The youth of our defense means we are likely to have a top 5 defense in 2014, it would be a shame to have a piss poor offense because it takes too long to break in a new QB...

For example: Murray's first year, Mett's first year, Driskel's first year... not very impressive.

Having Gurley and Marshall will certainly help Mason in '14 so I'm not all that worried about him

If he starts in 14, how much eligibility will he have left? Just 2 years?

That's a decent point, but having Lattimore didn't help Shaw or Garcia too much in 2011 and 2012. He won games, but it takes more than star running backs to win championships.

Mason will be gone after 2014
Honestly it's to early to look to 2014 as far as championships are concerned. We do start the playoffs in 2014 though

Well, that sucks for Mason.

Maybe we need to redshirt that new kid we recruited this year, let him play backup behind Mason in 2014, so 15/16/17 we can have some continuity at the position. Or Bauta, isn't he supposed to be hotshit dual threat guy?

I think we need to work it out now.

Someone will need a redshirt, this year.

Someone will need playing time/mop up, this year.

Don't forget the high school quarterback, Deshaun Watson, from Gainesville, GA that is supposed to be the next Cam Newton. There is a possibility he will attend UGA in 2014.

First and foremost, we have to plan with what we have, not what we hope to have.

ETA:

What's awesome is that this topic just pulled post #2 from a 4 month lurker...

And I am also responsible for pulling your first ever post this week in the Grantham/Defense thread!!!

Does anyone remember the last time we had a chance to get a QB ready for the next year and didn't. Let me remind you, Joe Cox started in 2009 and was very mediocre but rather than getting Mettenberger or Murray ready by letting them start the last half of the year, we let Joe Cox continue to start and even though we ended up with a decent record it brought on the terrible year we had in 2010 when we had to start a QB who had never took a meaningful snap. So we can either try to get Murray the Heisman, which is not happening or we can let him take the snaps until the game is under control and then get Mason ready for the next year, and by getting him ready I mean let him run the offense no matter how far we are ahead. Just putting him the game to hand off will not get him ready for the next year. jmho.

Man, I had to just read that real frickin fast.

I hope we prep Mason better than we did Murray too.

Mason will be 5th year senior instead of redshirt freshmen. And as bad as joe cox was, he still broke the passing tds record

Not really about what Cox did, but once we knew we couldn't win the SEC, the priority should have been getting one of the young QB's some playing time and maybe 2010 wouldn't have been as bad.

I agree but there were a lot of reasons that team was not very good but I think cox gets all of the blame. I would love to see Ramsey win the job next year as a RS freshman

Correct me if I'm wrong, but had we started Murray for the last half of that season, we wouldn't have him this year as we would have blown his redshirt.
