I'm late to the Uber craze, but I see now that this is one of the most genius and impressive game-changers of this weird time period we're in.

But, I'm wondering why would any sane person drive for uber in Athens G A of all places and deal with the people puking and pissing , passing out and whatnot in your own vehicleM

In my day, they had taxi vans, "Your Cab" was one I believe......and there was never a ride home ever once when weird shite didn't go down involving one or more of the idiot strangers you were sharing a van ride with at 2:30am.

Has Uber taken off in Athens?

Also, what is the etiquette on tips with the uber?

I always lived withing walking distance of downtown. Despite a few attempted mugging from the projects, it worked out. I didn't have money for a cab in those days anyway.

Imagine

-college students w/ car access needing to make extra money now have an immediate part-time job on their own schedule. As uber drivers.
-college students that don't have much money now have a cheaper alternative to cabs

I'm actually shocked that our over lords have allowed this to happen. Damn . . .

The ingenious thing about uber is you are rated as a customer. If you screw around with the driver, it will be very difficult to get a ride the next time. That said, not sure drunk college kids think that through in the moment. But certainly there is an incentive to behave and keep your friends in line when you're the one who ordered the uber.

That's one of those things you deal with anywhere you're an Uber driver. It's simply a risk that you take. The good thing is, you can set your own hours so if you don't want to do 2 AM Clayton Street runs, you don't have to.

It's a pretty shady company. Also, there are mass strikes going on right now with Uber drivers. Use it while you can because I doubt it continues for that much longer.

They also track where you're going too.

What's shady about it?

They've cut the price of a cab in half or better and made the whole process about a thousand times more efficient and convenient. Not to mention creating hundreds of thousands of jobs around the world.

That's heroic, not shady.

They take no accountability or responsibility for their product on a number of levels which have resulted in people getting hurt or killed.

People get injured and/or die in taxis so what is your point?

Not as a result of corporate practice.

Lol. Not a fan of taking taxis at all. Especially in Athens or other smaller towns.

Rationality is objective.

In the beginning stages it was great. There are some flaws for it, mostly from the driver side though. They're required to pay fees for every person they pick up. So if they pick someone up who wants to go .5 miles, they pay the same fee as if it was a 10 mile ride. It doesn't scale down at all which can make it not worth it for a lot of drivers.

Also, driver liability within Uber is not good. For example, if you're going to pick up a passenger and don't have anyone in your car and get in to an accident. You're not covered because you weren't technically working for Uber because you didn't have anyone in your car.

There's all sorts of stuff. They failed to do a background check for awhile. A bunch of predators signed up and attacked women. They have been abusive to journalists who speak out against them. They've hired people to try and put their competition out of business by putting in fake calls. And they are stealing data on you. They are tracking where you are going and what you are doing. That's creepy to me.

They also get my arse home when I need it at a much cheaper price than any Athens cab service can, plus they typically offer good specials and deals.

So they can have my address for all I care, good luck getting past my alarm and shotgun.

Would you rather they show up at the wrong address trying to pick you up or drop you off at the wrong place?

Of course they track where you are and where your going! That's the whole point. Just like a taxi.

Would you like for them to keep tracking and have that info after they've dropped you off?

If you're worried about being tracked by Uber then you need to go ahead and throw your cell phone in the lake.

I've got sour news for you... Everyone with a cell phone is being tracked. 24 7 365

I think you misunderstand the level to which uber is doing and and likely profiting from it. Uber has put out reports on how many of its users are having one night stands. That takes a lot of invasive action. They're looking at what your address is. They're looking at where you go. They're looking at when you go. And what time you return. Ain't no taxi company doing that.
