Ok I heard a rumor that the Jerseys were removed, but they are back today. Good sign?

Not sure if the rumor about them being removed was/is true, but it is a fact that they are on display right now.

Also, how do you feel about this?

It's a sign that the bookstore likes $$. That's about it.

It's a sign, to me, that he's not being suspended the entire season. Not that we really thought that was going to happen anyway, but still. Still just keeping my fingers crossed it's only 1 game.

Shockley, John Kasay & several others have rocked the #3 proudly & played well at UGA. If Gurley's name isn't on the back it should be a non-issue...

It's bullshite that they claim it's not Gurley jersey and that people are just buying a generic UGA jersey.

They should either have to pay the player royalties or have it contractually included in the scholarship that the school can sell the player's jersey.

Jay Bilas fricking crushed the NCAA on this issue last year. He basically went to the NCAA's online store and typed in players' names in the search box, which directed him to their jersey. This after the NCAA claimed that people were just buying the school's jersey, when they had players names as a keyword on their own site.

NCAA football video games were even more egregious. AJ Green wasn't in the game, but WR #8 for UGA was a freaking baller. That guy had a different facemask than Green though, so it was cool.

Let me preface this by saying I agree it's complete bullshite and almost everyone buying the jersey is doing so because it's a Gurley jersey. The NCAA and schools claiming people buy it because it's a school jersey and has nothing to do with the players is ridiculous.

But when selling a certain number, I wonder how they'd work out the percentages. Such as, when does it stop being a Shockley jersey and start being a Gurley jersey? I know in that situation there has been a good bit of time between the two. But numbers like #1 are always used by someone, and generally someone who will play a decent bit.

I feel like a lot of this murkiness that's built into it is another layer the schools and NCAA use to justify keeping things how they are because "it'd just be too complicated to change" when in reality we know why they don't want to.

That's a good question. I think it would be a lot cleaner if you could build in an addition to every player's cost of living stipend that is basically the school buying the right to sell a player's jersey with their name on it. It would end up being a small amount, but at least it's something.

If the school wants to continue selling the player's jersey after graduation, the school and player can negotiate royalties.

Yea I agree that would be a lot easier way to do it. And (even though I hate this word sometimes) more "fair" because you could also reward the players who aren't going to sell stuff through no fault of their own. That starting QB or RB may not look near as good without the O-line paving the way for them but you aren't gonna see many O-lineman jerseys on gameday. Building more money in as part of their stipend would prevent them from getting screwed when noone buys their jersey.

I think the team should buy a #3 jersey, and have every player sign it. Then gift it to Todd Gurley's mom and let her auction it off.

Take that NCAA.

If the school sold a #3 jersey with "GURLEY" on it share the proceeds with Todd. If they sell a #3 with "Shockley" then pay DJ. That's how you determine who gets what.

Certain jersey numbers are more popular depending on who is wearing them at the time, but not everyone buys jerseys because of current players.

Over the past few years, #8 and #11 were two of the most popular, for obvious reasons, but some people want to have a jersey with their favorite number on it (rather than the number of their favorite player), or if they want the number of their favorite player, that player might not be a current player.

So, without trying to figure out intent of every consumer who buys a jersey, it is hard to justify tying all revenue for a particular number to a current player for royalties, especially if it is a number that has been worn by popular players in the past.

The only way that I know of to do that is to add the player names to the jerseys. That way everyone knows exactly who the jersey is supposed to represent, and those players could then get royalties for jersey sales.

Why can't they decide on a royalty amount and put it in an escrow account? Let's make up a number and say it's 1% Put names on the jersey, like previously mentioned. Every "#3 Gurley II" that sells, $8.50 goes into the escrow account, payable to the student upon graduation or exhaustion of eligibility. If they leave early for the draft, then they forfeit those royalties and it goes into Hartman. The players that make the league are already forestalling financial compensation until they go pro. This would give them an incentive to complete their education and play for 4 full years.

Do the same with autographed memorabilia and digital rights/depictions.

Very much disagree with this part. That penalizes players for being good.

For example, it would be stupid for Gurley to come back next year. He can finish his degree later on, but he needs to start getting paid as a 1st round running back. He shouldn't be punished for that.

ETA: there is also no legal basis for that policy
