So what does UGA have to do to have a "successful" season next year?

We are preseason top-10.

Returning the best RB in the country along with one of the best O-lines in the conference.

Defense should gel, should be much improved (imo).

We've got all of this buzz right now. What do we have to do to build on last season and keep building momentum next year?

Personally I think we almost have to win the East, and perhaps the SEC, to avoid the ole "that's just Georgia, never putting it all together" mantra.

If we do that, especially if we somehow claim a spot in the playoff, I anticipate a 3-4 year run that looks a lot like 80-83. If we don't, I can easily see us staying in the "good but not great" category until Richt retires.

Thoughts?

Do? Do? Some things in life are actionable. Sports are passive. For Georgia to maintain a momentum, they need to train, train, train. They need to supercede all distractions to focus on the tasks in front of them. They need to be so confident in what they see in front of them, they never have a chance to question themselves. That happens in the film room. Sports is all preparation.

It's a big part sure, but all? No.

Let's say you take a team like vanderbilt. You give them 2 years off from playing any football games, and tell them that in september of 2017 they're playing alabama in nashville. Alabama is unaware of this, and they continue to play normal seasons with normal schedules.

By the time the game rolls around, vandy would have had a full 2 years worth of film study and game breakdown and would have the unbelievably MASSIVE advantage preparation wise going into the game. But the bottom line is they simply don't have nearly as good of players or coaches that alabama does.

Yeah preparation matters...for evenly matched teams. Sometimes, no amount of preparation will matter.

Yeah I am tired of hearing we are headed in the right direction. I think if we have three things happen this year we can have a great year.

1) No big injuries this year.
2) No suspensions which I not going to mention this again.
3) Lady Luck which means we need a lot of luck in some big games.

Agree with all that, but add someone steps up at receiver opposite of Malcolm Mitchell. Hopefully JSW or Godwin have a very good year.

If we make it to tSECCG and lose badly I will be disappointed.

I want a NY6 bowl.

Sigh....please weigh in if you feel differently. I'm not going to comment on the East/ SEC thing, other than try to comprehend using sentence structure as a guide.

And since the question was "what does it take to maintain our current momentum" I think sights are high. Again, comprehension is valuable.

We should win the East every 2-3 years. Period. If we do not win the East this year it is a failure in my eyes.

-We should have an elite running game.
-We should have a very good defense.
-We should have a very good special teams unit.
-We have a question mark at QB and that is a concern but it should be manageable especially with Richt and Schotty coaching them up
- We should have some senior leadership (Theus, Jenkins, etc.)

Now, just because we should have these things doesn't mean we will have these things. We must have a good fall camp and come out week one executing. I think if our starting QB performs decent/well we will win the East.

Great example!

For me, winning the East is the minimum. Winning the SEC is a success. Making the playoffs (which I would hope would happen if we win the SEC) would be no complaints regardless of the outcome.

The scary part more so than the QB situation, I won't say it so as not to jinx us. But we all know what can "hurt" us more than anything else.

if you mean "successful" means playoff birth

QB has to win one or more games for us..not just "manage" the game like Mason who I think was indirectly responsible for 2 of the losses last year (moreso by the fact he couldn't stretch the field and wasn't really a threat to most SEC defenses)

Richt has got to stop his stupid gameday shite (squib kicks and lack of not spiking the ball, etc)

catch some lucky breaks in a couple of key games

People that are disappointed or mad that we don't win the SEC more often are stupid. We play in the best conference, with 2 OOC teams in P5(outside this year) every year. We've never finished top 2 in recruiting under Richt in the SeC. Balls bounce funny, calls go the wrong way, etc. We aren't gonna win every game by 50 and need some of the lucky things

Winning the East is a must. Georgia is better than any other East team this year. Next year may be the year UTk is back in contention and Florida has a decent offense. But this year is a failure without an East title. Winning the SEC and making the playoffs will be the badge of success and greatness, but without winning the East we have failed.
